    Default Mitre Saw v SCMS

In an effort to control the amount of dust being thrown around by my current Bosch 10" SCMS, I've decided I need to build a dust box behind it & connect it to the dusty. My problem is the dust box has to fit in an 900mm wide opening behind the saw & my current saw uses much more width than this. Easy fix, get a new saw but do I go for sliding or not. I already have a 12" 3hp table saw with sliding table so do I really need to pay extra for a SCMS. Festool is out of my budget & my next preference is Makita. The 12" Mak scms wont fit, Milwauke will just & Hitachi has forward rails but is ugly as sin. So my question is do I go for the Milwauke or Hitachi in a scmc or get the non sliding 12" Makita & use the table saw for the bigger stuff? Accuracy is very important & I'm trying to for see what restrictions I'll have with a non sliding.
Any thoughts or info is welcome.
    Cheers,
    Paul

What width of cut does the Makita handle?

If you're using it primarily as a docking and/or mitre saw of long lengths that fall within it's capabilities, then I'd go with the non-sliding Makita.

Less moving parts, therefore less bits to try to keep tweaked to ensure accuracy. As you say, you have the TS for wider boards.

Unless they also happen to be long wide boards, in which case using a TS is a right PITA. Unless you have an infeed table or similar as a "second pair of hands."

Then, the SCMS is obviously the better option.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

Cutting capacity for the Mak non slide is 98x153 @ 90 deg, the Hitachi scms is 107x312 & the Milwaukie scms is 115x342.
There is only a max price difference of $75 between them so that takes price out of the equation.

I've always been a fan of getting the biggest anything possible (i bought a 3 foot engineering square that weighs about 12kg just cos it's so ridiculously huge) so I'd go the Milwaukee

    Default Another option

    G'Day Paul,
I have a Bosch 10" SCMS mounted across the end of my bench.
I cut a length of 3mm thick fluted rubber matting and pop rivets around the dust shute so it comes down to the base.
Now I have a cyclone filter in front of my Triton Dust Bucket, then an Aldi Vacuum Cleaner, 90% plus of the sawdust is collected.
I'm not sure if that helps but it works for me.
    Cheers, crowie

PS - I can take a photo if you'd like to see the how as a picture is always better.

    G'Day Paul,
I've attached the photos in a "pdf file".
The cyclonic separator is from Godfrey's Vacuums.
    Bit messy but short.
    Cheers, crowie
