My first ever post- Bunnings "Beat it by 10%" Bargain!!
Hi all. This is my very first post on the forum so I thought I'd start off by sharing my Bunnings experience. I was looking to purchase a Bosch GCM 12 SD sliding compound mitre saw and found one at a Brisbane Bunnings retailing for $1000. I went home, looked up the same saw on the net and found it for $905 at a tool store in Sydney. I printed the page out, took it with me back to Bunnings and they honoured the price comparison. I.e. matched the $905 and then beat it by 10%, therefore selling me the saw for about $800!! I thought this was a pretty good discount for the price of a printed piece of paper and 10 minutes on the net.
I say- do the research before paying full price.
CheersI'm confused??? Oh wait... Maybe I'm not?

Wooden Ewe? Blood oath, I wood!
That is awesome, mate! Well done!
They were not concerned about adding delivery charges to the Sydney price?

No nothing was mentioned about delivery. Before asking for the 'deal' I made sure that the model numbers were exactly the same and that there was one in stock in addition to the demo model. He admitted that it was a bit of bargain and said that he wished he could get it for that price. Now that they have set a precedent, I will check the Sydney store online first and take my printed advertisement with me for everything I purchase from Bunnings. Too easy!!

It wasn't an internet deal. It was the Sydney shop's standard price (not on sale.) I just searched their online catalogue, like you would with somewhere like Carba-tec.
I'm confused??? Oh wait... Maybe I'm not?

I went to Bunnings the other day after my wood turning group, still with my overalls on. (And no not JUST my overalls.)All the Sales assistants kept saying hello to me, and kept trying to assist me. Usually I have to check to make sure I'm not invisible. Or the assistants are all disappearing around a corner.

I often find that they are invisible on weekdays but all the part-timers must come in on weekends and they must all be told to say "Hello" to every living creature they see. When a bloke goes to Bunnings several times each week, it gets a bit tedious having to return these otherwise well intended greetings all of the time.
Who says that I am a grumpy old man!!!!

Wooden Ewe, I can't blame you for wanting to save some money, but let me share what just happened:
You helped to drive a store out of business.
Bunnings uses that tactic to drive away competition. They can afford to take a loss on a few items, because once that small store gets beaten they know you will have nowhere else to shop. And guess what happens to prices then?
I don't know which store in Sydney was your comparison, but I really hope it wasn't one of the good guys who offer GREAT product knowledge and service, a wide range of quality tools, and keen prices (usually with even more off when they get to know you as a regular).

Thanks Ron. I can appreciate your point. If it was feasible for me to purchase the saw from Sydney then I would have done it. The saw weighs about 25 kilo's and would have cost a packet to ship. Furthermore, the Sydney store is one of 4 franchises in Sydney and is by no means a small business. To be able to advertise the saw for $100 less than one of their major competitors (not on special) they must have huge buying power.
When practical, which is the majority of the time, I do support smaller businesses like Carba-tec and family owned companies like Gregory Machinery etc. As neither of these companies stocked the Bosch saw I was after and I don't have the money to buy Festool, I had to look further afield.
I had read previous comments on here about people getting ripped off by places like Bunnings and really only posted my original comment to let others know that I had some success in the whole 'beat it by 10%' deal.
In this case I don't believe I helped to drive a store out of business by not purchasing from them. And if I did, then I helped businesses like Carba-tec, C & L Tool centre, Carrolls Woodcraft Supplies, Trever Gaskell, and Roger Gifkin stay in business by purchasing from them in recent weeks.I'm confused??? Oh wait... Maybe I'm not?

I did the same thing recently on the Makita 12" SCMS at Bunnies who were matching M10 so I slept OK after that one. Agree totally though on supporting the smaller guys when there prices are competitive and there is not much to gain by a price match. 10% on a $50 purchase vs 10% on a $1000 purchase is a different story though!

Before everybody gets too excited....
I have read a few posts saying it is good to get one back on Westfarmers / Bunnies. Sorry to spoil the party, but you were not getting a hit on bunnies, you were actually getting a hit on the supplier of the saw.
The deal is that if Bunnies matches a competitor's price due to a cheaper deal in the marketplace, then it is the supplier who refunds Bunnies the difference, and not actually bunnies who pays the cost.
I know in the long run the consumer does not care who actually pays the difference, but it almost always the supplier who is already going in on very skinny margins.
Rant over.
Anthony
