    Question Backlight in auto helmet??

Any ideas how to keep ambient light out of an auto darkeing helmet? Mine is one of the helmets on special at BOC. It works a treat, good sensitivity, not heavy, nice shade of darkening so that you can see the weld pool. But, when I'm welding outside the shed (keeps SWMBO happier - not so much mess, you see) there is too much daylight inside the helmet. When the lens darkens, the back light frequently overpowers the view of the pool. This will be an increasing problem because I do have quite a few outside repair and fix jobs on the list. I have tried to block out the light with a reversed peaked cap, a bucket hat, all to no avail. I've even thought of trying to rig up an arrangement with a towel, but then we run into overheating and fire risks. Any ideas?

I just throw a shirt, rag, bandanna etc over my head. I think there are actual specific headwear things I say advertised at a welding shop somewhere.

I would be just attaching something like the soft leather bib like you use on the front to protect your neck to the rear edge of the helmet and so long as the size and shape were adequate, should work well and minimise fire and heat risk by using a rag of some type..

i glued a big flap of scrap leather to the back of mine. also put some on the bottom at the front, as my particular helmet was letting too much light from the arc in under my chin
