Kempi and Fronius
I think everyone knows the Kempi and Fronius are right up there in quality items in the 240 volt portable AC/DC TIG machines.
So has anyone tried the Chinese type copies that are now available
Like 200 Amp machines for around the $1500 mark...Are they any good or a waste of money...And has anyone had to buy a new circuit board for one if they have packed it in.

The value of a warranty
Kemppi and Fronius are expensive machines it is true however they have many years of R&D behind their name. Further they have a support network that spans the globe. Their prices reflect the cost of maintaining R&D and the network. Every dealer needs their cut, every engineer costs money and the robotised manufacturing facilities cost a bomb.
Chinese manufactured machines do not have anywhere near the level of R & D and do not have the support network. They are mass produced and sold to people for the sake of consumption. Whilst it is great that now everyone can afford to weld it is important to also consider on the upside that Chinese machines achieve 80% of what people globally require with the high end specialist market catering for the remainder. For the home enthusiast a Chinese machine will achieve 100% of what is needed.
It is not until a warranty claim is required that the true value of a brand can be interpreted by the consumer. Can you keep living if your warranty is useless? So really the consumer has a fairly simple decision. Assuming that both a Chinese and Euro machine will suit one's needs you can either spend 1K on ebay or the like buying from someone reputable or 5K from a brand name Euro dealer. It will always boil down to money and is the reason there will always be Huyundai's and Ferrari's.
