Default The Tig Files - What Filler Rods do I use?

As you get more into welding the stark realisation starts to sink in that Welding truely is a mixture of Art and Science. Obviously theres nothin quite like learning from blokes that have hung around in industry for many years.

Unfortunately though 'average Joe' often dosen't get access to this kind of information which is often locked into industry and specific skill sets; then handed down to the next generation of keen apprentices........

What I though would be a great Idea is to start putting a bit of information together for all the Tig Welders that frequent our forum on Filler Rod. What works in different applications and where to get it from.

If youve tried to hunt down filler rod for a specific application you'll know what im talking about n how daunting and time consuming the process can be particularly if you dont have any experts to guide you through the process and get you in the ballpark............bottom line is theres not a lot of really good information 'out there' in regards to filler rod!

Jump on in if youve got anything to contribute If youve had to tig it up and youve found something that works this is the spot to post it!!!

Default When its a critical weld u must match the filler rod to the parent metal

    Gidday

Best practice and service reliability dictates that in an ideal world you match your Filler rod to the parent metal. In critical applications and jobs where a weld failure could cause death injury or thousands of dollars damage steps MUST be taken to ensure that this occurs.

However in non critical welding situations and general maintenance welding there are a number things worth knowing that can really give you a 'heads up' in regards to filler rod selection when you dont know what the parent metal is or for certain applications.

Im an unashamed Disciple of Jody from Welding Tips and Tricks and havent come across any better information in regards to some good starting points for filler rod selection. So heres a few down n dirty tips from the man himself:
