Tischler’s Tools - Old German Cabinetmaker/Joiner's tools
– I am searching for any collectors’ who might have German cabinetmakers tools that were brought to Australia in 1848 on the ship “Leontine”, and formerly belonged to my great great great grandfather Erdmann Jäckel, who was a cabinetmaker (tischler). His full name was Carl Erdmann Jäckel (later Jackel). Any of his ‘tischler’s tools’ are likely to be marked with his initials E. J., or C. E. J., or his name E. Jäkel, E. Jäckel, or E. Jackel. He arrived in South Australia on the ship Leontine in August 1848 and lived for a time in Tanunda and Lights Pass before immigrating to Melbourne to work with his tools of trade in 1853. In Melbourne he lived first in South Yarra and then settled in Surrey Hills (then the Parish of Nunawading). I believe he worked on houses in the Richmond, Prahran, Hawthorn and Kew areas in Melbourne with Adolph Moeller, Wilhelm Finger and others, and at Doncaster with A. Schramm or Hermann Fuhrmann.
