Septimus CNC build rainy UK
Septimus is a nice little clock designed by David Atkinson. I'm not very confident when it comes to clock construction so I purchased a kit. Two weeks later a box arrived on my doorstep which contained a very nicely packed kit and some Haribo sweets which I planned to eat while reading the instructions which were sent by e-mail. Sadly, the kids snaffled the sweets whilst I prepared a cuppa.

The instructions were clear and as I'm very slow at building, I spent 2 happy months putting it together (pic above). I'm sure others could complete this clock in a weekend if they put their mind to it!
I'm now building my second from DXF files purchased from David along with a bag of bits and bobs (the little things you can't source in you own home town or normally have to bulk buy when you really only need one or two). Someone gave me an old wooden shelf to make the back plate (unsure of wood type - so if you can identify I would be grateful if you could let me know). The rest will be cut from aircraft grade ply using my little Zen cnc machine.
Pics below show progress so far

Zen unit
Hi Dean,
I think you might be right about the backing plate being oak. Although I have some oak stock in store which looks a lot darker.
The Zen with F8 screws is on sale in the USA for $680. It comes as a kit including stepper motors and the unit. In addition, you need to purchase a router or mill, a 3D stepper motor driver and DC power unit, computer and compatible software.
I put my kit together 3 years ago for £500 and at the time this was the cheapest unit I could find. I didn't have the confidence to build one from scratch so this seemed like a good idea at the time. However, it only has a 12 x12 inch cutting bed which restricts the size of the clocks I make. It's possible to make components in sections and then assemble aferwards but this can be fiddly. Earlier in the year I looked into buying a new unit with a 24 x 36 inch bed and was put off by the £2500 price tag. The Zen's good enough for me until I win the Euro Lottery!!

It's difficult to be sure from the photo, but I think that looks like Ash, or possibly even Chestnut.

Septimus with initials in the front plate
Rather than start a new thread, I thought it best to link these together.
Here's a photo of my first attempt at "personalising" the Septimus front frame with initials. It's a little dark for my liking and a bit fussy - will try again with a single letter.
A friend who likes the original version suggested I hang it on the back of the loo door and return to the workshop - nothing like an honest opinion! At the risk of getting more negative comments I'd like to ask whether this works or doesn't work for you and would be interested in hearing your thoughts on how you would make things work. I suppose a lot comes down to personal preference and life would be boring if we all liked the same thing! However, there's always room for improvement and we can always learn from others.
Kind regards. A

Setimus
Like it Alan.
As you say possibly a little dark but the concept is great!
Think I have finally got my Septimus to run reliably, my fault not the plans, and now working on getting the drive weight down.
Chris.

Septimus -plans are copyright protected
Hi, I'm unable to send you the plans for Septimus as they are copyright protected. However, you can purchase them from the following website www.woodentimes.com. I'm happy to send you the H W front plate design which I drew on the computer using cut2d1.5. This particular clock was a present for two friends who were opening up a new dental practice. The H and W are their initials. You probably don't need this - the clock plans come woodentimes with a 7 shaped front plate but if you do drop me a note and I'll send it across. Kind regards. Eastgate
