My thought is that if you were using ballscrews then there may be a case for the smaller motors.

They just MIGHT be able to spin a little faster. But with the acme screws I reckon it would be safer to go with the slightly larger steppers.

    Just my opinion of course.

Could not get to the sonar site to check out the transformer. The one Rod got would also be OK. Toroidal 35v 300va Altronics No. M5535

I think Rod is running four steppers on that one. G251s 3 or 3.5amp ??

Correct - mine are 3 amp/phase 497 oz motors, Gecko251's and running 35 volt 300 va 8.5 amp toroidal that delivers 49 volts DC. Best performance I have ever got from stepper motors.
Agree with Greg on the choice of the larger motors all round. If you find the smaller motor does not perform then you have nowhere to go except repalce them. Much safer path the other way.
    Cheers,

You could also try these places.

If your not in a screaming rush, I will have a look around in my stock and see what I may have hidden away.

I have plenty of high current diodes and some nice big caps.
More than happy to come around and wire things up for you.

In regards to my build, I have motors, controllers, bearings and rails. Just need to get my act together and start some design work. I love the look of your machine and how you built it. The laser cutting idea is fantastic. Dimensions will need to change for my needs, but the concept is ideal.

If you need any parts machined for your build, I'm happy to do some cutting on my mill.

Toby, I have a 24Vac 10amp torroidal transformer with a 25amp bridge rectifier and 2 4700uf high current capacitors. If you want them they are yours.
