Hi All,
I have been working on the loco numbers so that they look like the original cast number plates on the locomotive. I was originally really happy with the numbers I originally had, but they didn't really look like they belonged.
I have put in about 15 hours making these 3 number plates. A bit of finicky scroll saw work, hand sanding and tedious painting using a tiny brush. I used the livery of Indian Red on the background of the number. I am happy with how the numbers have come up - particularly when you compare them to my original numbers I had.
On the loco - Well I am not sure - they seem to stand out like the proverbial. Perhaps it is just that it is the white paint just being painted and out in the sun. Don't know whether I need to try and weather the numbers or what. At least they do look like the original cast numbers - but too bright - I think. Now working on the D4 locomotive type plate. The "4" is very difficult - but got one done so far.
Regards
Keith

Keith, I am in no way a paint or colour expert in any way shape or form,
BUT could you repaint the numbers & the border with white with a little added [the smallest amount] black to dull it off.
This is what our house painter did when he repainted the aluminum siding on the front part of our house...
Just a thought, cheers, Peter

Thanks Peter,
Wondering as well whether to just leave it uncovered for a while. I cover it up and tuck it into bed each night.. Then it may dull off in the shed.
I will have a little play with the paint like you suggested - I will do it on some scrap material for colour checking.

Keith, painted version of the plate does look better. You will save yourself some $$, no dome or number plates to polish. Each time a drop of water lands on the polished plates it would have left a stain, unavoidable as the tank filler is right above the plate (of coarse). Even if the tanks are not over filled there would still be a dribble from the hose. Now that they are painted it can be wiped down with the rest of the loco.
P.S. - better hide the brass plates so the scrappers don't get their hands on them.

The artists 'trick' to add age is to put just a dash of umber into the white , not black. Grey still looks stark, not 'old'. My SIL was involved briefly in the film industry and, to age a set, it was sprayed with a very light mist of umber. If you know someone with a modellers airbrush, a quick mist of clear with a dash of umber should do the trick?

Hi All,
Well, nearing the end of the actual locomotive and will soon be on to the tracks and support base. I still need to make and fit bunker handrails, rear coupler and disengagement mechanism as well as the VR Manufacturer's plate (That should be a real challenge - it is so tiny)
Today I completed the D4 Identification plates for the front and rear of the locomotive. For some reason - unknown to me - the 4 at the front is at the bottom and at the top on the rear in the original locomotive.
Have made and fitted the tail disc on the rear of the loco. This folds down to cover the whole white disc.
Attached some photos of today's stuff
Regards

Keith, Your train looks like it's just rolled off the train assembly line ready for service....MAGNIFICENT SIR......
When it's sitting on its tracks it'll be so life-like, you'll be able to take a photo and tell folk I have a train in my back yard and it'll look the real deal!!!
Cheers Peter

Hi Derek,
Thanks mate.
What I have done is given the numbers a clear spray coat of satin. It has dulled it off and I am really happy with the result. I have been working on the small VR (Victorian Railways logo) on the bunker. Happy with progress. Should have it and handrails done tomorrow and will post some photos.
Up to the Railway museum today and I gave them some A4 photos of the loco. They are going to display - which I am happy about.
Did a few reviews on different locos they have up there - Trev may be impressed with this "E" Class electric loco - the detail on the rivets is breathtaking

Hi All,
I made up the VR (Victorian Railways) logo for the coal bunker. Wanted to make it look like a casting - with the V and R as well as the crown in the middle standing out proud of the bunker. I used some cardboard - PVA glued together to make it 1/2mm thick. I cut out the V and R and also the crown using scissors and a scalpel. Sanded the edges with 400 grit. The backing plate is made from 1mm thick pine, I cut elliptical in shape. Then painted the cardboard with matt white. Cheated a bit with the centre of the "R" and the crown. Too tiny to cut the very small holes - they are painted on. Glued with PVA onto the backing plate and positioned with tweezers. When complete - 2 coats of satin clear - happy result.
I have also positioned the side hand rails and the steps beneath the numbers and logos.
All numbers have now been riveted into position.
Now onto the rear coupler.
Regards
Keith
