    Hi all,

Been working on the "Running Rails" along the side of the loco.

To be honest - I reckon this is the hardest stuff I have done in my model making to date.

Trying to get the 2 mating forms to match up.

How I did it was cutting some old chipboard I had into the form shape and then using one board as a Master so I didn't get too much added error as I cut out 8 boards to get the correct width. I then glued the boards together and smoothed the the shape down using a rasp. Continually checked the shape against the Splash Guard I had made.

Cut some 3mm PVC sheet 105mm wide and then drilled with 2mm to accommodate nails (these will hold the PVC form whilst it cools). Lots of fiddly measuring and checking to ensure I got all the cutouts in the correct position.

Made a datum at the top and nailed the PVC to the form. Then used hot air gun on low heat to slowly warm up the PVC until it gets to an elasticity point and it works by gravity into the form. Then you need to quickly nail the formed PVC into position so it doesn't move.

The formed PVC "Running Board" for the driver's side is now glued and clamped together. It is looking pretty good but will wait until tomorrow lunchtime to unclamp. Still got the fireman side to do

Anyway so far - so good

    Regards

    Keith

Been working on the "Running Rails" along the side of the loco. "Running Board".

If I remember correctly, the engine is Right hand drive, Fireman's side is the left.
Good to see that you came up with a method of reproducing both sides which are mirror images.
You almost need a "boiler" to steam heat your parts.

Looks like it is top green's in your workshop.

    Hi All,

    Clamps off.

Reinforced the join with bodyfiller. Then I reheated the edges with the hot air gun to get a better curvature. Lots of sanding and then first primer coat. Will sand back with wet rub and give another coat of primer. Also need to sand the inner slots of the splashguards as there is a bit of a rough edge on a few, but I am REALLY HAPPY with the outcome so far. It is good when a plan finally comes together - I had to cut some bits out of the chasis so this guard fits and looks like the prototype. Still have some under edging to add and top rivets along the entire outer edge. Then onto the other side.

    Regards

    Keith

Thumbs up Thanks for the last picture

Really helps get the feel of the size of the parts your working with.

    Hi All,

Formed and glued up the second side of splashguards. Easier once you have done one side.

I have fitted the first side I made to the loco (just sitting there). The bottom strip along the bottom of the guard I made out of rubber window seal. It is good as it takes the curved shape well. "Riveted" with heads of spiral nails. Cutout at the back for the trailing wheels which will be inside the cabin.

Once totally dry - I will do the same for the other side splashguards and then start on the side tanks that are on the prototype loco.

    Regards

    Keith

Keith we have got to "Hand" it to you to come up with these solutions.

Taking shape so beautifully. It's a joy to see my all time favorite loco coming to life here

What loco do you hope to do next?

    Hi,

I love steam but, I have always wanted to build a diesel locomotive. My mate Trev always said that a diesel was a BRICK on wheels and that he would hang it on me if I ever built a diesel - but he would always support what I did.

I think that I could make it look OK.

It will be one that has some interesting form on it - maybe a Y Class or X Class - although I do have a soft spot for the N Class although it may be a bit big -

So its a diesel - that will possibly be starting around Christmas.

    Thanks for the comments mate

    Regards

    Keith

    Hmmm

That nearly looks like a diesel.

Thanks for the photo - something to think about

    Regards
