Model "T" Ford Ute - Norm Marshall Style
G'Day All,
I've been asked to make Norm Marshall Style "Model T Ford" as a gift.
I was asked to use some "recycled hardwood", old telegraph poles to be exact.
They were difficult to mill to size on the thicknesser; the blades went off very quickly on the old hard timber.
I was thinking about the request for the "Model T Ford" & the timber and thought a "ute" would be the better way to show off the colours in the timber.
I then had to design the sides & the mudguards to suit.
I had to buy & fill a long split with clear resin to strengthen the base.
The base, the mudguards, the axle supports are all "recycled timber - telegraph pole".
I used a recycled oregon post for the cabin and added a veneer of cypress pine on its back.
The engine block is spotted gum.
The ute sides are oregon & the headboard cypress pine.
It stills needs another coat of clear gloss but its come up okay.
Cheers, crowie

HI Pete
Top job on the Ute great finish looks great.
I must ask is there a particular reason you were asked to use recycled telegraph poles it must have been like cutting steel was it a pressure treated
Would you like me to bring some more wheels down when I come down to the working with wood show at the end of the month I will do a run in the next week
Also did you know that Robert has not been well if you go to the safety part of the forum you can read what he has to say.
Col
PS Pete was it a cross arm rather than a pole my be !May your saw stay sharp and your nails never bend

G'Day Col,
I'm sadden to hear Robert is unwell; I'll check out the safety part later.
The bloke the ute is for, I think, recycles the old telegrath poles [electricity power poles]; both the old old ones and the treated ones.
I believe they sell the resawn timber for flooring, decks, etc.
While I'd very much appreciate some of your wheels again, I'd be pushing the friendship & generiousity too far PLUS I bit the bullet & bought a wheel profile cutter for myself [found cypress pine flooring makes good wheels].
I can't do the tyre tread like you do as I don't have a lathe; might try to hold the wheel in the drill press on a mandle & runs a blade on it as it rotates??
You are also very right about the hardness of the timber as I mentioned it took the edge off my thicknesser blades.
See you in a fortnight, my shout for the coffee.
Cheers, crowie

telegraph poles
That’s ok Pete great to hear you have a profile cutter for the wheels will take you up on the coffee.
My main concern is that the pressure treated poles could have been treated with a carcinogenic substance especially the older ones and these may be the ones he is using their use to be a health warning regarding these poles and Telecom as it was called in those day stopped using them might be best to find out a bit more before you mill any more.
Maybe more to the point if they are decking or flooring and there are small children crawling around on them the potential outcome could be very serious if this company is in business work cover should know about these things, in saying all this I could be altogether wrong about the type of poles they are using but I feel it is really worth me explaining the potential of things, should the wore case scenario be a fact.
Treated Timber - What is CCA?
