Default Semi Trailer, Steam Roller and Train

    Hi,

Have spent some time making toys. Gave the pen making a rest. Was wondering what you would expect to pay for the semi trailer with the steam roller or as separate items. Reasonably happy with the results. Now need to sand and varnish. Thanks for looking.

    What a top effort Todd,
You've done a very good job.
They look great; robust and ready for play.
    Who's plans are they please?
What are the measurements on the please?
Keep up the good work in your toymaking.
    Cheers, crowie

    Hi Crowie,

The semi trailer was based on one from Norm Marshall's Great book of wooden toys. The steam roller was based on my imagination as was the train and carriage. The Norm Marshall book is brilliant except for the different wood sizes. I can't access those sizes out here in the sticks.

Yes Todd, It's a great book.
I just use my thicknesser to get the correct timber sizes.
Congratulations on the "imagination"; as said "top job".

    Sorry Todd,
It can't be that bad in western Queensland.
My Uncle & Aunty used to live there.
Anyways, I worked in engineering procurement for a long time before I was medically retrenched.
I managed to buy a great shed of useful tools.

    Crowie,

When you have a 3m by 3m lawn locker as your shed, you need to prioritise what you have in your shed. Bench, lathe, bandsaw, drill press, tool storage and the like. If it has a footprint it will need to go into the other 3 by 3 lawn locker. Drop saw, table saw, wood storage and air compressor. And the yard gear, gold clubs, fishing gear and other stuff.

What I am saying is that I have more stuff than shed. Am learning to stream line what I do. Will help when I get a bigger shed.

    Thanks for your encouragement.

Some friends have seen the photos of the semi trailer etc and now they are starting to ask how much to order one? does anyone have any suggestions as to how much you would sell the semi trailer for once it is varnished? (without the extra steam roller on top).
    Thanks, Todd

    G'Day Todd,
At the local month market in Springwood there a few blokes [retiree's], who do some well presented "farm trucks, fire trucks & the like" and they range from $35 to $55.
One bloke suggested that he makes between 20c & 30c as hour, if he gets the timber for free; but that's all the public will pay.
So Todd if you get the timber for free and can make a few at a time [product line type] you could sell the head&trailer for about $65 to $75; it depends on how much time & effort you have to expend to make them kid proof & safe.
    I hope that helps.
    Cheers, crowie

PS maybe a bratter might be better; say tools, timber, or other items of equal value???

    Hi Todd
I know what it feels like to have 3m x 3m shed because my shed is that size. I cant get in my shed though because it is full there is just a small walk in when I pull the mower out. So most my work is done in 4 hours at my local shed. So I reckon you are doing pretty well to get anything made amongst all that stuff. Well done Todd.
Ps my shed roof is only six ft six high and I am six ft seven

Default Suggested selling price for Semi with ramps

Todd I congratulate you on doing an excellent job, especially since you work in cramped surroundings,( small shed )

** Pricing,- Crowie's estimate is quite reasonable. There is another methord which I use myself,- Pretend you are the buyer, and ask yourself, " What would I pay for this toy ?? "
Pricing should cover the materials used, even," freebies," should be priced,- plus whatever Dollars you place on your own time.

I also design and make Wooden trucks for sale,- but mine are totally different being more what one would best describe as, " Model-Toys, " with a much higher selling price attached to them, - quite often into the Hundreds of Dollars range,- and, I get sales too, from people who appreciate more detailed, " Toy," trucks.

    Photos added below,

    'ave a good day,
    Roger

    Default Sold my first truck.

    Hi,

I have sold my first truck. $140 for the truck and steam roller. I thought that was quite good. I didn't even have to negotiate. The good thing is that I am not overly interested in selling what I make. Other than pens that is. This is a bonus. I have now received 7 orders. I plan on selling them for similar prices and then using the proceeds to make other trucks and donating them to schools and and child care centre's to be used as raffle prizes. Finished article attached.

That's a ripper deal for you Todd, WELL DONE.
What an excellent price to get for your efforts.
Plus you've got 7 orders backed up; roll out the production line.
You might have a good little business going soon, though with good ethics like yours, you'll have to keep your day job.
The schools & childcare centres will really benefit, top job.
    Cheers, crowie

    G'Day Todd,
With production line going and orders rolling in, you might like to consider the bulk purchase of the wheels, headlights, etc.

Texas Supplier is Woodworks Ltd Wood Craft Products - Wooden Shaker Pegs, Balls, Wood Toy Wheels

Wisconsin Supplier is Woodworking Parts Toy Making Supply - WoodWorkingParts.com

    I've bought from both.
May be worth your while to have a look.
    Cheers, crowie
