Hi, I know what you're talking about, I'd planned that intermediate stage for my toddler too.
I was thinking about just taking the crankshaft out of a small bike to get the same result, and save the cost of the seperate unit.
If you want to build it, go for it, but I reckon this is the easier option.
But I should mention I haven't tried it yet, mine's too young, might not be suitable at all..
Cheers.

You could adapt this to suit your purposes:

I know the ones you mean. I saw one teh other day that had a seat a bit more like a off road motor cycle (Doncaster shopping centre). I haven't looked for plans, but if you find a picture you should be able to work it out from there. Add up the cost of materials. Tyre, bolts etc, and you may come close to the purcahse price. Most are made from ply, which is also bent, which makes another hurdle.

To my everlasting shame, I was going to build one of these for my kids, but I saw one in Aldi for $40, so I bought it and spent the time making something else...
Cheers, Richard
