First Toy WIP
Well I thought it about time I did a W.I.P. on this forum even though I have done one for the https://www.woodworkforums.com/f174/m...inished-91060/ elsewhere.
This is going to be slow at times so bare with me. Spent the day preparing the wood like surface planing thicknessing and squaring one edge. All the wood you see is after the preparation is complete, the piece on the left is another project that i will be making along side this one as I like to have 2 or even three project going at the same time.
The second photo is of the chassis cut out and ready for some holes to be drilled.
One thing I have not told you is what is it I left a clue in one of the photo's. I know this has been built on a number of occasions I would have liked to have built the Dennis Engine but great grandson wanted this one.

Not a lot done today just the bumpers and the axle housings most of the time was spent setting every thing up for the small amount of machining that was required. The bumper slots are routed before cutting to width as it gave me something to rest the router base on the same applies for the slot down the middle of the axle housing. Have fitted and glued the axle blocks in place will take a photo of that tomorrow.
Also routed the corresponding slots in the chassis when dry I will open these up working up in drill size as this will mean that they should follow the slots and stay in line.

Thank you both.
More of an update spend a short while in the shed and managed to do a little to the fire engine.
First thing was to glue the axle housings and bumpers.

Next was back to the saw to cut the prepared wood down to the widths needed for some of the components this being the top of the cab the next are the parts for the bottom of the cab also cut to length ready for the wheel arches to be cut. I have changed the plans slightly here as I am going to make some seats for the inside instead of just a solid block for the cab.

Next photo is of the water tank parts again the wheel arches need to be cut out.

And finally a quick dry run on the chassis. I have plans to change some of the other parts as this is not a scale model.

I did try to do some on the engine yesterday but felt tired and as many know being tired and playing with machines is not a good mix so I gave up and started afresh today.
Anyway first job was to have another look at the cab something was niggling at me about it so I slightly changed the design (which I had already done in the first place) I cut a new back wall from 1 piece of wood instead of the 2 I had originally. The original plans use a solid block for the cab and I wanted at least to have some seats inside. Also drilled the holes for the headlights when I make them and cut out the wheel arches. The last photo is of the parts for the top cab

Next was to make the steps behind the cab here I added 2 holes to take pegs for some wooden firemen original plans only have 2 at the rear of the engine of which you can see the holes in another photo. Next to that I have cut out the pump housing not yet complete, also glued up some wood to turn a hose reel which I am going to fit to one end of the pump housing the paper is glued into this so that when it is turned it will be easier to split it along the paper join

Also spent time making the ladder swivel which includes the fixed base, swivel base and ladder pivot.

The last picture below is of another dry fit showing all the parts in there place except for the top cab

Why is it that you can spend ages in the shop and not have a lot to show for it

Great Job Derek. I know you think your progress is slow, but it is better than mine at the moment which is zero. Also as you said it is no bueno to be in the shop and tired or not feeling good. One second of loss concentration could kick you out of the shop!
Keep the pics coming.

Before I start I would just like to say that I hope you are all safe and not near the fires, take care.
Thank you all for the encouraging comments.
Anyway back to the build spent a very short time in the shed yesterday and managed to glue the main cab body up. Today I started with some of the detail of the cab, starting with the inner wheel arches
Fire truck inner wheel arch fitted.jpg
Then the next job was to put a floor in and the back bulkhead. I have not gone for a full cab interior to help with the strength after all it is going to be played with
Fire truck cab floor and engine cover.jpg
Make a couple of seats and glued them in
Fire truck seats fitted 2.jpgFire truck seats fitted.jpg
As can be seen in many of these photo's I have rounded over the top of the lower cab assembly as it is easier to do it now rather than when I have completed the cab, tomorrow will make a steering wheel and when that is dry I will give the inside of the cab a varnish.
As always another dry fit nothing really new there
Fire truck dry fit 3.jpg
I am building this in small modules to make it easier to work on as each module is complete I will stick it down to the chassis.
For those that have built this will know that I have changed things on the engine after all it is just a toy.

Yet another day with not a lot done, the first two pictures are of the hose reel I am going to put on the engine. The second of the two is where I split it along the paper join
Hose turning.jpgHose turning seperated.jpg
Also spent time making dials, steering wheel and the frame for the hose reel.
Cut outs.jpgcut outs 2.jpg
The pile of wood that I am using for the truck I like to keep this close to hand instead of in the wood shed as it is to cold and wet on occasions to keep running back and forth
Various woods for fire truck.jpg
Some of the work on the pump housing the hose reel fitted I made a surround for the hose reel and put a thin veneer behind the reel to help highlight it.
2013-01-09_17-28-26.jpg2013-01-09_17-28-34.jpg
On the other end of the housing I put some discs to represent gauges and water outlets and made up a small lever panel from the off cut of the hose reel
2013-01-09_17-36-46.jpg
Another little job was to make up the light cluster for the roof. I have only rested the roof in place as there is still more work to be done on the cab including fitting the steering wheel I have made.
2013-01-09_17-31-38.jpg
Also managed to have a little tidy up and glue some parts. I am now waiting for them to dry
