Wheels More Of
Hi All
They say that the wheels make the universe go around well I don’t know about that but they certainly make this toy forum go round and here is my humble little effort.
1 Cut wheel out with 50mm wheel cutting profile (Drill Press
2 Clean up on lathe
3 Drill out center with 42mm forstner bit ( In lathe
4 Turn wheel over and counter sink other side with 46mm forsnter bit ( In lathe)
5 Turn down center that was cut out from center of 50mm wheel blank
6 Mount center piece in lathe and drill eight 2mm holes vertically into center
7 Trim 8 cane rods in to holes and trim to make spokes.
8 I don’t know if wheels make the universe go around I
just made that up but the rest works see attached pics

Hello Colbra,
Thanks for letting us see into your wheel making world. Where does one find these profile cutters? Is that an Aussie thing? I may have to pay some post. When you say you cut the 2mm holes on the lathe, is that with a drill bit in the tailstock or you just use the late to hold the piece while you drill with a hand drill.
Would be very interested in more detail about the spoke wheels. I need to make quite a few for some upcoming projects.
Also the Monster truck wheels what are those bad boys for?

Hi Bj383ss & Diggerdelaney
We have all been asleep down here I am pleased you took the opportunity to have a look at my wheel making efforts while I had a snooze.
Bret in regard to your inquires the profile cutter is made in Australia by CARB I TOOL see attached video by Stu’s Shed Stu’s Shed TV (Videos 01 – 15) « Stu's Shed. And yes I did hold the piece in the lathe with a lathe chuck while I drilled with a hand drill around the hub.
There is some where on the forum a jig or home made rotary table made to use in a drill press to drill these holes around a cylinder I will try to find it and put it back up here.
The monster truck wheels are for two road graders for my Boys (grandsons).

Also Trend do a set http://www.trend-uk.com/en/UK/produc..._set_body.html
But you will need to check your local region for suppliers or have a look at who ever supplies router cutters in your area

I was about to ask the same. Where is the WIP thread for the Grader?
Or are you just teasing us.
Thanks for clarifying about the spoked wheels. I have a picture of a jig from another forum. It looks complicated but I think it is very accurate. Not sure if I will try to build it or not.

Thanks for sharing that with us colbra, Just goes to show there is more than one way to skin a cat, or in this case, to make a wheel. These ideas are all welcome bits of information that we can store in our memory banks and use on future projects.
Reality is no background music.

Hi All
There a couple of places that sell those profile cutter I think CARBITOOL is the bench mark of them.
Fozzey the wheels are made up from a Toys and Joy plans number 70 Road grader when I get the chance I will take some pictures and email some detailed direction the wheels are made in two halves and there is eight steps I think Bret had some pictures of the process on one of his threads.
Bret your right on the mark there awhile back I built two Seagraves fire engines they took me about 12 months to make I done WIP but it was that slow everyone forgot what I was doing so I thought I would be a bit sneaky and put bits in the back ground as I submitted some threads that way people might see it coming together and realise
I’m not asleep in the hammock all day.
That jig does look a bit fancy I am waiting to hear from Aussie about the rotary jig I thought he may have made it as of yet he has not replied but its only been a couple of hours
While I have been typing this Munruben has put a piece in he is on the mark and may remember the article it may have even been him that submitted it a couple of months ago

I have another setup but cant find the pics etc.and time is short today. Will try to get back if I canBack To Car Building & All The Sawdust.
