I built this coffee table with dressed pine. I had a go at staining with 'Feast Watson Stain and Varnish'. I painted it with a brush and the result is not too flattering!! For the second coat, would you suggest using a paint pad and a tiny brush for the hard to reach corners?

Hi John and welcome. I personally prefer to use a stain first and then finish with a polyurethene satin or semi gloss finish. Gives a better finish I think than the varnish/stain type thing. I usually brush on the stain, easier to get into those little cracks and corners, leave the stain for a couple of minutes or so and then rub off the surplus with a cloth to give a nice even coating.. After the stain is dry, I brush on a couple of coats of the satin or semi gloss finish.

Thanks mate, looks like it's all a bit too late now. But, though it's not too perfect, it's got that unique, beautiful look (consoling myself here??!!!) and I reckon I'll leave it at that (as there's not a lot could be done about it now!!)
Next time, I know where to come for advise before I even start something.
While I've got you, I'll ask one more question. I'd like to fit in my garage a storage unit resembling the kitchen cabinet with a table top. It's 4.5m and probably 600 to 800 mm deep. What's the best option? Build one out of melamine board? MDF? I'm planning to store shoes in one section, tools and few other things too. Please suggest what's the easiest and the cheapest way. Thanks in advance for your time.
