Is it a current or archaic meaning for the word? Just like to know so then I can use it in woody circles and sound terribly knowledgable

'Sticking' a moulding is the same as 'cutting' or 'shaping'. It is an old term, but I'm afraid I don't know the etymology of it.

I think that stek is a Dutch word for cut or cutting - so it may have come across with William and Mary's lot in the late 1600s.

Certainly, it's simply a carying handle. If you were to try carrying the table by grabbing it under the gates, the fact that it's hinged to the top above the level of the bottom of the gates, the gates and legs would swing out, making it impossible to carry.

The finger grip is above the hinge line, so everything below the grip will be suspended vertically and behave itself when carried.

I thought that would be its use but the fingers would seem to be about 900mm from the end of the leg which would mean carrying it with a crooked elbow - a bit uncomfortable over a long distance . But I guess that would not have been a concern for the officers.
