    Default TV Cabinet

    Hi all,

As a relatively newbie to the wood forum I thought I shold drop a few photos in of my current project, a wall unit for a plasma screen to sit on as opposed to TV cabinet which to my mind should surround a TV rather than hold one up. This cabinet came as a sort of request from the little lady when our 68cm cathode ray TV went on the blink and we bought a 104cm plasma. Of course the old TV cabinet (a lovely unit made from beefwood) was no longer large enough and we were modernising. The suggestion that she could go out and buy one (probably from Fantastic Furniture) was a red rag to the bull and so started the project. Of course there were a few deadlines that got missed but it is coming along nicely.

I had a few nice planks of red cedar in the shed which would make the top and shelf, but not enough timber for the whole unit. So I had to find something similar in colour and settled on Ooline (Cadellia pentastylis) of which I still have a collection left over from a few furniture commissions.

I have no raw state photos but all the timber was put through my Kity 15" under and over planer. The legs were stop mortised to the frame. All the wide panels were joined using a Porter Cable biscuit jointer using #20 biscuits. The centre shelf is entirely made from Ooline and very solid.

At this point I thought the cabinet was done, but no. the wife caught a glimpse of it and wanted doors and didn't want to see "any ugly cables at the back". So the next iteration of the TV unit is the door building and panels for the back.

I'd better get back to it.

    Cheers

Thanks Andy, I'll post a few more shots in coming days. Job is nearly finished, just waiting for paint to dry. Notice you're just up the road. Small neighbourhood!

I would be very happy with that, although my wife would want cupboard doors as well. Must be a wife thing.

    Bravo mate!! A wonderful piece!!!

Just be careful putting things on the top because the cedar is easily marked.

Mr. Brush, shouldn't be too heavy. Red ceadar is quite light. Don't know about the other two but probably about the same density.

It's got a bit of weight. As stated, the red cedar is light (also marks easily) but the Ooline is extremely hard and relatively dense at around 1100 kg/m2. Two people should be able to move it in no trouble at all when finished (hopefully this weekend sometime). I've used Feast Watson Satinproof to finish it. Two coats brushed on, then a final coat through the spray gun. I used to finish furniture with pre cat nitro cellulose lacquer but found that any surface with sunlight on it tended to age very quickly. The poly finishes are fare more stable but need a lot more care with the application and drying i.e. don't do anything in the shed while the paint is drying.

    cheers, Bruce

    Default Cabinet update

The doors took a little bit of thinking about. I didn't want to make them out of cedar or Ooline as the colour would be too dark. I needed to lighten up the unit, especially since filling in the openings at the rear both sides would stop light from coming through. I had a bit of bitter bark and myrtlewood but not enough for panels and doors so settled on some very light silky oak.

For the doors I didn't particularly want to go to raised panels as I'd used in the last cabinet (Photos 1 & 2) and opted for a square slab for each door to give it a more contemporary feel. So I planed up and joined the required materials for front doors and thinner back panels. (photos 2 & 3).

Being aware that the silky oak would look a bit plain on its own I decided to carve a bit of a decorative piece for the front. Ended up settling on a Mexican design (sun motif) and carved it out of scrap cedar using an arbortec power carver which has been sitting in the cupboard relatively unused for a year or two. Came up not too bad. (Photos 5-9)

    See what you think.
