    Default Hi Fi Cabinet

Had a 8*4 sheet of what i thought was Oak faced plywood , bought back in 84! turned out to be MDF. Also a old length of 200*50 hardwood.

The oak faced panel was to heavy for me to handle and I was also worried about chipping the edges of the veneer. So decided to try out the draw saw purchased at the last wood show. Fast, accurate , no dust. What a great weapon ! used a straight edge clamped to the work and a hand held pressure block. (pic 1)

Routed rebates in the panels (Dust mask etc!!) ,pre drilled holes for shelf pegs. Then assembled the panels, glued some joints with PVA and others with Urethane. Urethane seems to have advantage that the foam excess ,is easy to remove and does not stop the face taking stain later.(pic2&3))

Cut the hardwood into 50*50mm sections and routed rebates to fit the MDF..Hand finised the 45 bevels and corners with spoke shave and chisels.

Could not figure out how to drill holes for the hing bushes close to verticle edges. So made some brass hinge plates instead.(pic 4).

Had to use a teak stain to match existing furniture, finished with 3 coates mat urethane , rubbed down with 1000 grit , then a further 2 coats of Danish oil, to give a soft satin finish.

Decided to make removable CD storage trays, which would sit on top of cabinet whilst in use.. have a slot in the front for the empty CD case, each tray holds 40 CDs.(pic ).

SWMBO say's I can buy some more wood now!!

Got message that max 5 pics had uploaded OK, but where are they ??

If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

    Nice one Paddy!

Can I ask why you put Danish Oil over urethane given that it's supposed to be a penetrating finish?

SYMBO felt it was a little too mat. considered wax polish but did not want wax on surface in case i decided to apply a satin finish later. Had just the desired result and leaves options open.Seems to have dried to a hard finish!! with a nice satin appearance.
