Default Lowline unit from old sleepers, fence palings and ceiling joists

SWMBO has commissioned me to build ourselves a new entertainment unit for the lounge room so after giving me the run down on height length etc she has allowed my creative license to take over.

The material from this project is being sourced from several places, sleepers that were the old (now replaced) retaining wall at my church, some fence palings collected from firewood piles and some 12" X 1.5" Blackbutt ceiling joists that were pulled from a wool factory in Sydney.

I will be posting photos but here is a quick video of me milling the sleepers down to useable stock.

There were powder post beetle babies in one of the pieces and they kept squirming out as I cut and worked it, so I soaked it with pesticide then filled all the galleries with resin.

Here's some sketches of the design, let's see how well I can stick to it...

Here's some progress photos, I've jumped quite far ahead in the build but I will have video of the stages in between soon.

    Lining the inside with palings:

And here's the other side, I ran out of palings but had more of the slats I'd milled down to 6mm (in the video in the first post above) so I used them.
I'm gluing them down with some rubbish parfix pva that I had to get rid of and using 23ga headless pins to hold them in place while they set.

And this piece had to be intricately notched out on the tablesaw to fit around the hinges

Got the drawer built and installed yesterday on Movento tip on slides.
The floating panel was made by book matching a section of old fence rail and filling the nail holes in with epoxy.

sorry about the upside down photos, even after I saved them upside down and reloaded them it still flipped them when I posted it. Seem this forum software doesn't like iPads

This is great work. I really like the design and love recycled timber. I'm contemplating a new dining table with breadboard ends, so it looks like you'Ve done a great job.
Why did you need to notch out around the hinges? Did you install the hinges before the cladding?

Love it very impressed. The timbers if from the wool stores will be impregnated with years of lanolin one of Sydney's most famouse wool store Godsbrough Mort I think went up in flames and burnt for days due to the lanolin in the wood structure.

    Thanks Trav,
yes I did fit the hinges first then the cladding, initially I was going to leave the inside as marine ply but after cleaning up some of those palings I just had to use them so it was an afterthought.

Thank you, it didn't smell like anything but Blackbutt or feel greasy at all but they were ceiling joist and were very high up so maybe they didn't come in contact with it?
it was however about twice as hard and heavy as current F27 Blackbutt
