Rocker WIP
I saw a beautiful rocker in a gallery in Margaret River that I couldn't afford ($7500) so I thought I'd make one for myself. I am a fair way in at the moment. so there are no early pics, sorry. I made up a bit of a pattern and started producing bits. The sides are joined using tennons and routed to the pattern. The head rest was hand shaped on the bandsaw, Currently playing with back splat and seat heights and shapes.
Really enjoying this project. It is mostly jarrah except for the bottom of the rockers. Not sure what it is.
You can see the mock ups of the seat and back splat in the first three photos. .
Fourth photo is the some jarrah being dressed for the back splat.
Fifth and sixth photos shows some pine being dressed up to make a mock up of the splatt for testing. The world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel.

Wow ..... Coming together nicely.
Any reason for the choice of a different timber for the rocker component? It seems a bit of a shame to interrupt that wonderful flowing form. Now proudly sponsored by Binford Tools. Be sure to check out the Binford 6100 - available now at any good tool retailer.

This one is a bit of a trial run. I'm just using stuff I had lying around to make it as I need to play with the angles etc to get it right. I think the top part of the frame isn't laid back enough and a few other changes need to be made. I shall refine it and make a better one next time around.

Hi Yowie
Interesting design.
I am not sure how strong this is - can you describe how the load is carried and held? There appears to be an awful lot of stress on the front section, which is just two small mortice-and-tenon joints (or have you used biscuits/dowels/Festo thingies?).
By comparison, a Maloof rocker has the following supports ..

Hi Derek and Christos,
The mortice and tenons on the front curve are huge and completely through, like a lap joint. I can sit on one side without so much as a creak. With the two sides together, plus the lower cross member supporting some of the weight through the back piece, I don't think it will have too many dramas. Hopefully...
You're more than welcome to pop around if you'd like to test it yourself.
