Funny you should say that Fencepost! A friend looks at the left hand one and sees a WWI soldier in a cape sitting in a pose of exhaustion, with his right arm across his lap. When you see it in the flesh, in the right light, it really DOES look like that - with a helmet, even ! But SHHH about the madonna thing, please, or I'll have a tribe of people of a certain pursuasion lining up to be blessed by the chiffonier, & LOML would definitely not like that.....
On of the fascinations of these sorts of panels for me is that the effects come from the diferent reflection of light caused by the sudden grain changes, so you get different pictures as you view from different angles.
Now, we better start a new thread on bookmatched panels & wild grain, or at least give the thread back to Clawhamma, who started it with a rather nice piece of cedar. I only wanted to show Woodwould how cedar coloured up after finishing....
Sorry Claw,IW

How true, but in terms of bookmatched panels, virtual symetry is often an indicator of ridiculously thinly sliced veneer stuck onto man-made board.
At least with Ian's lovely door panels, there is no doubt that the boards are bookmatched, but the fact that there are significant dissimilarities indicates they were separated by a substantial saw blade and what ever clean-up that ensued..
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

It's all good guys, it's all about the wood, yours, mine, it doesn't mater. I'll have some more photos of the little side table tomorrow, I put some finish on it today and it went a deep dark red. I have used Wipe On Poly, satin, it would have been nice to use shellac but when you are selling these things I don't want ot to get rings etc. The Wipe on Poly is the next best thing as it is so light a finish the Cedar doesn't look all cloged up with finish but keeps a nice open grain look while still having reasonable protection. Pics tomorrow.

Ok Christos, I still have to make the drawer, I have cut the front and the ply base, the customer is dropping more Cedar around tomorrow so I can finish the drawer. As I said before, finish is Minwax Wipe On Poly 3 coats on the legs etc 4 on the top so far,and still have to cut the legs off, it looks like a daddy long legs at the moment. Oh you don't notice that join in the top normaly, it is somewhat highlighted there in the sun.

Hi WW, not sure yet, may be a small turned Cedar to blend in or I may conceal a small just under the lip of the top, I will check with the client today. WW, you can see the diference in Cedar if you look at the back panel, it is almost white. Both Red Cedar.

Almost complete, just need another coat or two on the front of the drawer and then a light buff with polish perhaps. The drawer sides ended up being Rosewood I think, which is better as it is a bit harder than Cedar, less likely to wear out on the drawer runners which I made out of Tallowwood (naturaly lubricated and hard). The top has 8 coats of WipeOnPoly. The drawer is made to fit Newcastle telephone directories white & yellow pages side by side., I have put in a pen holder that will be under the white pages, (limited space). The drawer pull is quite conceiled to meet the clients wishes, just a window sash lifter with most of the curl cut off. I will take some nicer photos without the harsh afternoon sun which makes it all look a bit blotchy. I need a better shot to put on my web site.
