timber and glazing
G'day,
I am building three windows into a bay type enclosure (brick on edge sill, steel RHS sides and 8 mm lintle above).
the timber frame is jarra (100x50).
Glass I am using is 8 mm laminated (1 meter H x 1.81 meter W).
I was going to cut with my router a groove (10 mm) in the bottom rail to sit the glass in and then rebate the top and side pieces and install some jarra moulding as a stop. I am concerned due to the size of the glass that if I rebate the timber I will weaken the material too much so I am considering, using "angle iron" as stop (screwed into the Jarra) on both sides of the glass. Does anyone have any better ideas?Last edited by totsky; 21st November 2009 at 01:33 PM. Reason: elaboration

G'da Totsky and welcome to the show.
It would be handy to know the thickness of your Jarrah framing.

If you are going to cut a rebate for the glass, do so in the top of the frame. A rebate in the bottom will just collect water and will rot. There's not really much need for 'strength' in a window frame to hold the glass, but if you are worried, just make the frame from thicker material.

the easiest way would be to tack stops on(31x15) a heavy bead of silicone place in your glass then tack in stops to hold glass in place.
