    other than a birdsmouth scarf, you can add a key or spline into that joint as well.

    somewhere on the 'net (and my broken external harddrive) is an english translation of 'how to' do japanese timber joints) or here

    Many thanks Ian!! That is how I intend to do the join- as per the rafter photo.
    Just didn't have the key in mind.

    Why do you eschew the use of bolts?
