    Default 9" gearbox lubrication?

I have a 1946 model A, with the Norton gearbox. I've never had this apart, but when it was off I saw all the gears etc from underneath. Now, what I couldn't figure out is how oil could get to all these moving and meshing parts, from just the one oiler on the top left of the 'box. Can someone who's had it apart shed some light on this? Jordan

I think you will find that there are oil galleries feeding across the gearbox and shafts.

From memory Pipeclay is spot on:

In the case casting there are holes that take oil to the bearings of the 3 shafts in the gearbox (input, lay and output). I recall the lay shaft has a slot along its length than allows the oil to get to all the gears - by leakage between them and hence onto the teeth.

My memory of the details above could be completely wrong but I do remember being surprised at how a pump of oil into the oiling hole came out all over the place in the upside down gear box - Mr SouthBend and then Mr Hercus thought about things!
    cheers

...........and what sort of oil would be best for the gearbox. Would Singer sewing machine oil do the trick?

Can't tell you the best - I'm using slideway oil 'cause its in the oil can, suitably sticky and seems to be one of the replacement for those older oils listed in Mr Hercus' Text Book of Turning - someone kindly posted a link to a PDF but the essence is here
    cheers

    Hi Dave,

You suggest "slide way oil", what brand name and type of oil is that, and where do you buy it?

I'm sure service stations of today, wouldn't have a clue what I was talking about. They seem to be more interested in selling three chocolate bars for the price of two. Would Bunnings have it, or do I need to go to a machinery dealer?

You would probably have to go to an engineering supplier or an oil distributer,
myself I use Hyspin 46 Hydraulic oil for everything, old machine and no problems.

I found "All Things Oil" via this post

    from yellow pages -
4 Monterey Rd Dandenong South VIC 3175
    ph: (03) 9791 4633

Helpful chap - recommended a hydraulic oil for the headstock and a slideway oil for the ways

(and because that is what I have I use it for everything else)

Sells in what I think are 5 litre containers. ( I have not run out yet so I forget the exact size.

only association is as a customer.

    hope that helps
    cheers
    David
