Ive got CTM 16086
Its another ex-school machine, from west wyalong HS. I think this machine has either been parked next to a grinder or been used to cut a lot of cast iron, the bed is past its prime. Its not so bad that its not capable of most work, even being reasonably accurate over a longish cut. The tailstock base is worn also, a little lower than level and enough to annoy me. I think its a bitsa, which isnt unusual for a school machine. The leadscrew is in excellent shape, yet it had half nuts that were worn to the point where they would no longer hold the screw at all, which makes me think the original ones were swapped out and I got the duds. The lathe is acceptable, for $400 is a good deal. But what I got with it made it a great deal. I got all of West Wyalong's change gears, a heap of steadies and a whole bunch of tooling. If anyone needs some 9in steadies, I got a few to spare here, fixed and travelling! My machine will eventually be converted to ATM spec, I used to have QC boxes with my last schools 260's and they were indeed nice to have. The powered cross feed is also missed.
Ive also got 6 machines, all hercus 9in's at school under my care, one day ill get the serials and post em up. They are mostly in good shape, but the spindles have suffered from neglect in the form of a lack of oiling for years. They are still capable of doing some good work. I believe the serials are in the early 9000's and all six are consecutive if i recall correctly.

Tanii51 is right. What the real problem is and why Id rather be rid of them is that there isnt enough metal off the bottom of the steady to get down to anything that could be used to hold the steady on the 260. Perhaps with some serious surgery on the steady and maybe even on the lathe, you could achieve something...but it smells an awful lot like hard work.

My New (Old) Lathe
I have just aquired a Hercus 9" AR 13503 which I think makes it a 1971. Matching numbers. Worn out Half nuts (replaced) and lots of swarf (removed). Need a lick of paint but otherwise seems fine.

New (old) Hercus lathe
I have purchased a Hercus Model C lathe.
RGE VB783
Daubed in cream coloured paint. My intention is to strip it down, clean it up and repaint it.
The lathe works.
Regards
Keith

They just "keep on keeping on", apart from the paint that is. I do not remember if it was Rolf Harris or someone else who said that. I am pretty sure he used to say (in TV commercials in the 1960s or 1970s) "Trust British Paints ? Sure Can."
Any older and they might start carbon dating the paint in your lathe.

Hercus 260 model ATLM 17788
I have been meaning to post this for a while now just been lazy its been sitting in bits for to long so ill post on the rebuild to. I pick this lathe up from a engine rebuild shop that buys out shops then sells the surplus. It came from an engine shop in Sydney the guy said it was in a basement as the shop had 2 stories and a split level between. The curiosity about this lathe is the cabinet is to old and short for the 260 I believe they had an older 9" workshop lathe they retired then bought the 260 without a cabinet. maybe the boss was trying to save money and thought the bolt holes were the same but they were not. The cabinet has suffered some abusive cut and shut work but it is ok for now. I found like a 3" crank bush wedged in the cabinet this lathe must have had a long life and now its all minehappy turning
