    Default Hercus Vee Bed Angle

    Hi,

Just wondering if anyone knows the angle of the vee beds on the Hercus 260/9"? For some reason I thought it was 60 degrees, but I'm measuring 47 degrees. I'm measuring it by putting a protractor with a straight edge against the edge of the bed and going from there.

    45 degrees Ben.

That's the top section of a Hercus plain saddle stop.

    Thanks AB,

I bought my protractor from a ebay seller from Sth Oz for about $10.00 and the accuracy shows.

I made a quick first attempt of a lathe stop, its a bit small but getting there.

    Ben

ps The protractor is 2 degrees out, it read 47 degrees when it should of been 45 degrees and I did a second check at 90 degrees and it read 92 degrees. I guess you get what you pay for.

Good to see that you are getting some good use out of your Mill.
I was thinking of you yesterday whilst milling some aluminium with a fly cutter as I mentioned recently.
The fly cutter cuts very well.

    Hi Bruce,

Last week I did a lot of milling but this week I've used my shaper more! Really just finish faced the first part of the lathe stop - the shaper gives such a nice finish.

Regarding milling aluminium, I got sick of the mess it made so I've started coming up with some ideas to stop getting swarf everywhere. As a stop gap I've put some approx 3mm clear plastic my wife bought for the kitchen table down the vertical column, I cut out the vertical head shape out of it and just hang it down. I reckon it will work for the time being.

I've got the next 9 days off so taking the missus to Canberra without the kids to have a look around, but will start the base next Wed or Thur.

When I get the chance I'll post some photo's.

    Ben.

I have been milling some aluminium also.
Been making a toolpost holder for the Hercus 260, to mount the air pencil grinder ($30) I purchased recently out of Melbourne.
Previously mentioned about the flycutter, it does an outstanding job & its a low price set up, with good tool life & easy to sharpen.
The Alum makes a mess, as you mentioned. I have done a similiar makeshift guard using clear flexible plastic sheet (out of Spotlight) I simply wrap it around the end milling head, & apply a secure paper clamp to hold it in position, it rests down on the workpiece & vise & is flexible enough to yield.
It stops the shaving flying & they can be hot. I always wear safety glasses, after having a close call a while back.
Glad to hear that you are enjoying the mill.
    regards

Still going on the lathe s

I made it too thick so I took off about 4mm with the shaper. I will hopefully make the locking base late next week.

    HI,

Still going on the lathe stop. Slowly getting there.

Drilled a 8.1mm hole because I couldn't find my 8mm drill and then cut slit using the horizontal arbor on the mill.

Then drilled a 5mm hole to the required depth, then a 6mm hole through top part of locking piece. I will hopefully tap the bottom tomorrow at work.

Sorry about the picture quality, got a new Nokia phone and the camera in it isn't so good.

    Ben.

    Hi,

Finally finished my lathe stop. It works but its not as good as I wanted it to be. When I drilled and then tapped the main body I was slightly off skewer in one of the holes, so I can only use one out of two holes.

Also, as stated previously, I drilled the Dial Indicator hole at 8.1mm because I couldn't find my 8mm drill. Well the hole is too big so I had to tape up the Indicator shaft for it to work. I thought I would of been ok using the 8.1mm drill because the slit and caphead bolt would of taken up the slack. Obviously not. I did a test run with a imperial drill of about 7.8 or 7.9mm (can't remember what size it was) but it was too small even after the slit was cut. Really need to find the 8mm drill.

I used the shaper for most of the surface's, comes up much nicer than the endmill. I also bought a 16mm HSS endmill which made things a bit easier than using a 12mm. I think eventually I make another, maybe out of steel instead of aluminium.

    Cheerio Ben.
