Source of replacement belts:"V" and others
Finally tracked down the place I got some belting from in the past, then lost address. Their details are at: F & D O'Connor Home Page
They had all sorts of variety, down to circular section leather, as on sewing-machines, up to latest polymer replacements. I have no connection with this business, but know how frustrating it can be trying to get a non-standard belt for something.
Cheers,

Anyone know of a good supplier in Sydney? I'm about to pull the spindle and will change the belt while it's out. Alternatively does the above supplier know the Hercus size and can simply mail a replacement?

hi pete, they wont know what size you need as they are simply belt wholesalers and resellers and manufacturers, not machinery specialists as such. I tried to get a size worked out for when i pull my sheraton spindle(it was running old brammer belts, stretched and decayed)and i had to buy a new brammer and strech it and then do a guestimate on a b belt,i ended up buying 3belts,one either side of estimate so i could get it right(i live an hours drive away from o,cooners) and they are happy to refund the other two and the belts are only $12 to $15 each anyway.Good luck with the job.danny

G'day Pete,
I don't know what model lathe you have but if it helps any I replaced the belts on my 260 with Bosch automotive belts and they have been really good.
The Bosch belts (for a 260) are as follows:
Motor to countershaft: 13A0825
Countershaft to spindle:13A0775
These numbers decode to A section Belts 825mm long and 775mm long.
Most drive belts come in increments of 25mm or 1 inch. I think fractional inch belts are available but tend to be special order items.
Most bearing supply places sell drive belts and If you take your old belts allong they will measure them and usually give you the size closest to but smaller than what your old belt measures.
Hercus lathes tend to have fairly generous belt adjustment but if the belt is not right most places will take a belt back and swap it as long as you haven't run it. New belts will strech after the first minute or so of running under load.
Good luck.
Cheers,
Greg
