Default Do you scroll wood thicker than 1/4?

Hey gang...I'm new here. I'm not a scroller myself, but I sell a lot of wood to scrollers.

My question is, do you people only scroll 1/4" thick wood? It seems that whenever I get an order for wood, for a scroller, it's 1/4". Whenever I get an order for 3/8" wood, it's almost always a knife maker. 1/2" wood, is some kinda project.

The reason I'm asking is because I was going to make up some "scrollers specialty packs", that consisted of some Red Oak, Maple, Bloodwood, Purpleheart, Walnut, and a couple other species. I wanted to have a nice variety of species in the pack, but didn't want to get into a bunch of different thicknesses, also. So, am I ok, if I keep it all at 1/4"?

Well..... if you want to sell your wood to Australia you'd have to make it pretty cheap since the shipping costs are very high.... also .... make sure customs will let it in... Australia is pretty darn strict about "natural" stuff...

As for thickness... scrollers use anything from paper thin to about 1 1/2".... it all depends on what we're scrolling. Portraits you'll be ok with 1/4" ..... puzzles you'll want 3/4" or more..... but there are reasons to use anything and everything in between too.

Do you intend to send any to Australia?
I am interested in some purpleheart.
    Say 2 pieces off 1/4" x 24" x 8"
    2 pieces off 3/8" x 24 x 8"
Can you give us an idea of cost to Australia 3220 please.

I just went to USPS.com, and the shipping cost on a 4 pound package would be $39....so I think you folks are correct, that the shipping will make it prohibitive.

I knew shipping costs are big... shipping is usually higher then any books I order from the US.
In the case of wood I'd think the additional problems with customs would really make it very hard to import it. I'd think it would have to be specially treated before they'd let in into the country.

I have shipped timber out of Au. And I have had people send me ornaments they have made out of wood, from o/s. I have had trouble with neither. I have a feeling that as long as the timber is milled it is ok. On the package I shipped out of Au I had plainly written on the package exactly what it was.

As for thin scrolling timber, J & C Thin Timbers in Gympie sell just about any species you could want, at just about any thickness, too. Not sure about purpleheart, though.

Import restrictions TO the US don't seem to be as tight as ours here. Australias restrictions are much tighter.
Here you can find out what you can't sent to Australia:
    http://www.daff.gov.au/aqis/mail/cant-mail
You can receive finished wood.... wood that has no possibility of any buggy thing, anything live.... so wood with bark is a "no no"

The imported wood you can buy from dealer is supposed to be treated, just like anything natural you try to bring into the country... when they stop you at the air port you get the choice of either leaving it behind or paying for special treatment.

I don't consider this a hassle, I think it's a good thing we try to keep any little creepy things out of the country.

I have send a small block of Australian red gum to my son in Texas and it got there allright, but read later you're not supposed to do that....... but I guess there are so many more parcels going over there it's harder for them to control. I lived there 25 years and only had one parcel opened by customs.... here 8 out of 10 are opened, so there's not much chance of getting somethign through anyway.... might as well keep it honest and safe.

The trouble I've had with customs all revolved around bark. If there is no bark on the timber you should be fine.
