    Smile New Zealand clubs

Are there any scrollsaw networks or clubs in New Zealand? If not now might be a good time to try and get something going in the Auckland area maybe.

    Anyone interested?

Not that I have heard of.

For starters you could put a notice in your community papers to see if there is local interest.

    Good luck with it.

    Hi Hobbyhorse,

I am from NZ but not Auckland.
Have been looking for a scrollsaw for handyman use but there are very few to select from - what saw do you have?

    Ken,

I have just bought a Hegner 2SVS from MIK International in Australia. I previously had a Ryobi .. poor!.. I then bought a Makita which was better but had an unstable variable speed motor which would race to full revs at right the wrong moment. The blade changing was also not too special.

I researched a lot before choosing the Hegner which is just wonderful.

Unfortunately Dewalt no longer has the DW788 available in New Zealand or Australia and the next best here is the Delta P20 from Carbatec in Auckland. This one is not electronically variable, speed wise, but by changing the belt on the pulleys different speeds are obtained. I did not buy a Delta for that reason and also because the top blade holder is held on a pin mounted "for and aft" which means that the top of the blade can go sideways a little to give an out of square cut. I will probably be taken to task by the other Delta users for saying this!!

Having had two cheap scroll saws and finally having to spend the big money for a good one I would not again buy one of the many "Taiwanese" style of scroll saws.
I hope this is of some use to you.

    Regards, Rhys H.

    Ken,
On reflection the answer above is probaby not much help to you. I earn part of my living on the scroll saw and thus require a good one whereas there are a number of "Holden" quality saws where a "Rolls Royce" is perhaps overkill.
I suggest that you get in touch with Carbatec in Auckland Ph 09 274 9454 and ask for their catalogue. They carry the Delta range plus their own Carbatec range which will cover most of your needs as a weekend saw. It finally depends on how much you want to pay and what you expect out of your machine.

Ken, Good to hear of another scroller in Palmerston North. There is a group of us (all members of the Manawatu Woodworker's Guild) here. We all learn from each other and are all using Delta machines, 4050, not the one Rhys is talking about. We find them very good. Feel free to email me if you want to meet any of our little group.
