Default 12 mm router bit in 12.7mm (1/2'') collet?

I have one spiral cutting bit with 12 mm shank diameter and a router with a ½ collet. Is it safe to use this bit in it? Will it hold it firmly?

I have never tried this, but I am sure that it will NOT be safe to do so. 0.7mm is just too much for a bit spinning at 20 000 rpm. It may feel tight but I am sure that as soon as it is spinning and pressure is applied, it will start to move out of the collet.

I believe Leigh and I know Festool (since I have one) make a 12mm collet reducer. I would not entertain using a 12mm cutter in a 1/2" collet under any circumstamces but with the adaptor.

I agree, the collet would clamp the top but the bottom of the bit would be floating in the collet and would move around under load.

Thanks for the answers and good arguments. I won't use it.
