Default Help with Gifkins/ Triton gear

    Hi everyone,

I recently bought the Gifkins Jig and the big Triton with hopes to replicate some of those amazing boxes made by Roger.

I'm still working on the final router table design, but have another question:

If I make a box to include a glass front (some sort of display box), should I buy a seperate small laminate router to cut the 3-5mm recess for the glass? If I make the cut along the lenght of the stock with my Festool gear, the cut would show on the ends when it is dovetailed together. Are these laminate routers plunge as well?

Probably some basic answers would set me on the right track.

Thanks for all the info on the forum to date - brilliant.

You can do those 3mm slots on the Triton router, no problem. Just use a 3mm slot cutter like the Triton bit which comes with the biscuit joiner or can be purchased separately. Slow the speed down because it's a wide bit, and you're away. Gifkins also sell a small slot cutter so check the website. It's part of the set of 4 box cutters he sells.

The other way, which is a bit tricky, is to use the table saw blade. You'll find the kerf is almost exactly 3mm. But watch the blade

If you download the video of the Gifkins from our Forum Videos section, you'll see the slot cutter being used for a timber base and top.

It could be just es easily done for glass. It will show you how to do it without the slot coming out the end of the timber. you just need to round the corners of the glass, which is easy to do. You could get that done when you order the glass cut to size.

Yes, what Gumby said is spot on. Use the Gifkins rebate bit. Will the glass fit in like a 'floating' base or lid as explained in the Gifkins booklets or will it sit on top in a rebate?
If it is to be like a base, I would make up a plywood template to see how it fits BEFORE ordering or cutting the glass. Good luck with the first attempt.

To answer your other question, laminate trimmers don't plunge, but you can buy small plunging routers.
