    Default Ryobi ert2100vk collet issues

    Hi guys and gals.

I recently purchased one of these and I'm generally very happy with it. One critical issue is that the collet does not seem to fit in the spindle well, which allows the collet to skew out of alignment when the bit is tightened. Either the spindle is bored out too far or the parallel section on the collet is undersize.

    Anybody had the same issue?
It was a factory refurb to start with and I'll call the place tomorrow but they are in Vic and I am in bris so not expecting much there.

Even if someone could mic the diameter of the parallel section of their collet, that might give me an idea if the spindle is out or if it's the collet itself.

Anybody know if any other manufacturers are compatible?

    Thanks,
    Shannon.
    Cheers,
    Shannon.

    Hi Shannon

I have the same model router in my table, it has done lots of work but never any problems, but I do tighten the collet very tight. I did have a gmc router which blew up and the collet is exactly the same size. I am not sure what exactly you want measuring but I have measured the collet on the out side machined area with my digital calipers. Its 16.01 mm. I also measured the inside which registered 12.77 mm. Do you have this problem with 1/2" and 1/4" collets. Could you not have a look at a Bunnings store in Brisbane. Feel free if you have another questions

    Hi Jerry,
    Thanks for the feedback.

I measured the machined parallel section (towards bottom of picture) and it came out as 16.20mm. Strangely, the corresponding bore inside the spindle measures at 16.20mm as well. I don't trust the internal measurement though because I am only using verniers directly (not having a set of internal gauges) so I expect it to read low.

I have been way too busy with work and have not rung the shop yet.

I am thinking about sleeving it but the hassle will prob mean too much $
    Cheers,
    Shannon.

    Hi Shannon,

Same router, same problem ( I think ).....

So where to from here ? The bit I am having trouble with is 1/4 inch upcut spiral from McJings. The bit comes loose in operation and is left plunged into the wood and the router is still spinning away. Will an adaptor bushing from elsewhere be any better than the supplied Ryobi one ? I dont suppose there is a trick to upcut spiral bits I'm not aware of ? First time using one.

The Ryobi website only has an email option for customer service. I've asked them what to do and will report back what they say.

    Many thanks,

    Sam

    Hi Shannon & Sam

As I said before I have the same router and I also have the smaller 1200 ryobi as well. I use the big one mounted in a table and it has had a lot of use with both the 1/2 and 1/4 collets. Not that long ago I did something wrong and ended up bending the shaft of a 1/4 router bit. From memory I beleive Makita had a bit of a problem of the bits coming loose when using their adaptor collet (1/2 to 1/4) when using the leigh jig and the tip was to buy the gifkin adapter collet which hold much better. But I do say that I hade not had any problem. Sorry I can't help.

    Cheers Jerryj

Hey thanks for the input guys. I have been pretty smashed with work and moving house since I started this thread so I haven't contacted the place of purchase. As soon as I do I'll let you know.
    Cheers,
    Shannon.

I've solved my problem with a Carbitool collet ($10). So far so good. Will be interesting to see what Ryobi have to say.

Found this thread too Ryobi ERT2100VK vs ERT1250VN - Woodwork Forums . 'Sawmaster' seems to have had the same issue as me.

Good luck with yours and let me know if I can help in anyway.

A very nice chap from Techtronic Industries (Ryobi, AEG and Milwaukee) just contacted me regarding my collet issue. They were not aware of the problem as apparently no one had ever brought it to their attention.
I recall someone here saying they posted their receipt for the new collet to Ryobi along with the dud one....looks like the mail room never passed it along !

I've forwarded the link to this thread to Techtronic.

    Just a bit of FYI...

I recently got a bit jammed in the same router and after a lot of very coarse language managed to free it, but damaged the collet in the process. I was able to order a replacement a couple of months ago and was told there was only about 15 "official" collets left as that model has been out of production for quite a while. I nearly bought a few of them "just in case", but I guess if Sam's Carbitool solution works I wouldn't worry too much about finding a replacement.
