Recently I bought a letter template kit from Lee Valley so I understand what you are going through. I have had only one trial session with mixed results. Since then I have bought a couple more template guides and an additional bit.
What router, template (if any) and bits do you have? What type of material are you making the sign on?
Others may be able to give you a guide.

Gooda how yer going happy jack ,this is the first time that I done this (I suppose I sound kike a girl jumping onto the merry-go-round of bliss) I have a smaller makita router with a 8 m\m collett ,off memory only about half horsepower ,a set of carba-Tec guides ,no inserts ,and only about 15 routerbits, of various shapes, as of yet sign making is something i'am yet try .also as a new member of the woodworking forums I would kike to get some advice about which way to go, but the idea of creatating sigs from Aussie hardwood timbers has being a desire for quite sometime,

Try this web site. Signs & Designs - Milescraft
The links show video of how it works. I bought the 1212 signpro as it came with everything I need to start. (I also obtained a case to keep all the pieces in as I could not see myself putting even 32 [one set] templates back into a cardboard box.)
I have a Festool 1010 with 1/4" and 8mm collets. I found that I had trouble controlling the router using the core bits that came with the kit - but that could also be me. The material I was routing was pine. Due to having dust collection I found it near impossible to see what I was doing so was moving the router blindly. Some letters turned out better than others. K, N, M, & Y had indifferent and inconsistent results.
When I next have an afternoon free I would like to try the Festool guides and script bit which I since bought. Not sure when I will have a free afternoon as there are a number of jobs to do around the house first.
