Dust Collecting-Think outside the square
Why build a cyclone when this may do the same job!

Not bad but not much room for tools in there

I'm guessing that the pipe is for am exhaust vent to outside? Great Idea setting the DC up outside, but could do with some refinement.
Have a nice day - Cheers

Actually, this is a very good idea. I'm not sure about the tin top on the DC, and I think that it might be hard to keep the particle size small coming out of the collector bag, but the point is that the whole DC is outside the workshop, so you're not recycling the air from the DC through the workshop (and your lungs).
Assuming that the outlet from the top of the DC exhausts outside, and not back into the workshop, of course...
Trying to achieve the same thing myself. Just have to get the airflow sorted so that fresh air comes in and DC air stays out.

with all the shavings laying around on the ground one might think this pic could be a just a load of rubbish ...but on close inspection you might just be the altimate superhero, most of us already have one of these typs of DC"s and keep planing a cyclone but can't find the time or $$$, briliant mate ,a little rough around the edges but brilliant...
now can you please explain why there is a silver drum on top of the DC instead of the bag, and where is the filter...???Hurry, slowly

I'd be more worried about the piles of sawdust around the hut - it would appear it's missing quite a bit!

Good thinking
Most of the current designs are American based. Because of this, and their climate, they focus on systems that recirculate within the workshop as the extraction of large volumes of air would cause heating to be virtually useless.
In Australia however, an external collector is quite practical and has the added benefit of removing yet another noise source.

the one thing a cyclone does better than anything else is the ability to seperate extremely well and the absolute ease of cleaning, just put a bin under botton of the cone, no hassles, and so simple...they need not cost a fortune, Wayne:s one he built is more than big enough for most of us woodies,http://members.optusnet.com.au/waynedavy/

Harry 72 the pipe is the exhaust.
Major the shavings are from a pile behind the photographer that have been blown about by the wind
Wood Butcher yourè right about the pipe. What refinements would you suggest?
La Heurta the silver drum was from a previos modification, not necessary now ,but no reason yo remove it.
What other pictures would you like?
The cyclone may look sexier but the making is more involved, once you understand how and why what I have shown you works you may not want to go to that much trouble

la Huerta a couple of photos.
This DC conversion (if you read everything written about airflow)should not work,BUT
For all of you that are contemplating a separater in front of their DC this can be made portable having a footprint not much larger than a standard DC and you dont lose airflow through the extra 4in pipe.
At present there is no `filter`for the fine dust (no close neighbours),but one could be fitted (which you would have to do if you built a conventional cyclone)!

Gidgee, glad to see you come out of the dark.
Stop and think people, if the sawdust is next to the lean to, then it ain't in the shed where it all got sucked up from.
Ask to see the ducting gidgee has set up, not main stream perhaps, but where is the sawdust?Boring signature time again!
