dust collectors
first of all, many thanks to all who answered my first question about die grinders. very helpful.
i've been looking at different dust collectors for my small shop. i am mostly using an angle grinder to rough shape my wood and that puts out a cloud of dust. i ordered a trend shield mask but i'm also thinking about a small dust collector like the 1hp unit put out by harbor freight. i guess my question is, is something like that effective and how well does it work. is that large enough. thanks in advance. larry

Your problem will be directing the output from the an angle grinder so that the dust collector can collect the dust. The problem is that a dust collector uses a 4 inch hose which would not be suitable for an angle grinder.
You might be better off looking at an up market shop vac as the hose will be a lot easier to handle. Then fabricate some sort of shroud for the business end of the angle grinder.

I agree, and on that shop vac, install a mini cyclone so the dust doesn't enter the vac.
There's a video of a mini cyclone system which you can download from our forum video section. If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

I dunno, what about a standard 2hp DC with a big gulp chute pointing to the output of the grinder?
The big trouble as I see it, with any dust ciollecting is the variation in the output of the dust from the grinder as you swing it around this way and that. Most other stuff has either built in dust extraction, or is a non-moving piece of machinery with a cabinet for getting the dust.Boring signature time again!

I don't konow the 1hp model by harbour freight, but I first bought a GMC 1hp. One thing to be aware of, that I wasn't, is that it probably has a plain cloth bag - if it is anything like the GMC.
I found it had reasonable suck for what I wanted it for, but was put off by the cloud of fine dust it put out. In fact I don't use it anymore - I'm trying to work out how to best improve it. Better named a 'dust disperser' - all it collects is the big bits!
Either use a vacuum or go for a dust collector with a needle felt bag - or better.
I also use a big gulp - they need a lot of suction behind them to be effective, because of the big area they cover.
hope this helps
