Thanks Bob,
I've only had to make 1 direct connection, and that's the one from the dusty. I pushed the hose into the socket, and duct taped it on. This was suggested by one of the other members, and worked well. The other hoses fit onto the gates.
On the subject of gates (the plastic ones), for the last two I modified my approach slightly. I cut a suitable sized piece of 4" pvc pipe, making sure that the cut end was as true as I could get it. Slopped on some pvc adhesive to the end of the ring, and around the base of the gate spigot. Put the ring in place on the spigot, and put a weight on to to hold it in firm contact with the glue. Once the glue had gone off, I used a plastic Syringe to fill the gap between the outside of the gate fitting, and the inside of the pvc ring. Took a few hours for the glue to go off, but made a really good joint. The gate now fits the pipe socket quite normally.
Got the whole thing in place now, except for connecting the bandsaw hose, and setting up the lathe hose. I have run the dusty with 1 port open, and am really pleased with the result. Okay, so it's not the same a 2hp unit, but there is enough 'suck' to do what I need. Might be a bit of a pain opening/closing gates, but it's a small inconvenience compared to breathing dust.
I am very pleased with the Carba-tec dusty (vertical unit), and think it was good value for money. It fits easily into a small workshop, and the noise level is certainly not objectionable. The felt bag filters well, and I couldn't detect dust particles floating around. It's got a 5 um bag, so there will obviously be smaller size particles getting through at some stage. But it a big step up, from the environment I had.
Thanks again for all the comments and suggestions, your help was greatly appreciated.Last edited by chrisb691; 12th March 2008 at 10:26 PM. Reason: typo
