Were you wearing the required yellow sock on the left and the green on the right foot when you tried ?

Thinking out loud here, But maybe you could spread epoxy or whatever resin it is on a silicon baking sheet, lay feather on it and roll up round the tube like a swiss roll.

I'm still experimenting Rhys, but best I have found so far for large feathers is using Kwik Grip Advanced, available at your hardware in a tube. Paint the glue on thinly on the feather and tube, once dried clear cut off spine of feather (the feather stands should stay together), then roll feather around tube using baking paper (pressing firmly). Leave for a few days, then coat with water based spray lacqer (supercheap auto sells it) in 3-4 light coats, to help with bubbles. Light coats on days with low humidity, or it will turn white! After a few more days cast, under pressure works best.

    Good luck.

Might have to actually try one now! Not that I make pens.

turn up a mandrill with your 2 tube sizes , and use plasticine to jamb the tubes to the mandrel you need 2 inchs of mandrel sticking out both ends , oil up the tubes ( spray olive oil works well )
, swiss roll it in glad rap , so twice around the tube , then add the heavily resined up feather as you roll , , 1 1/4 turns is best , avoid wrinkling up the glad rap by keeping it tight ( to tight and you pull the glad rap off the tube ) , keep the glad rap short of the ends of the mandrel so you can vacuum bag it up using mastic around the mandrill to seal the bag , and suck the air out ,bind the out side in insulation tape to hold the pressure on then , then let the vacuum off ,(the vacuum makes the bubbles bigger )
if you have a pressure pot , cure it in that ,
once hard strip it off the tube (cut the mandrel and sand until the side of the tube appears if its stuck ) , and you have an over lap round feather , trim the overlapping edges straight and paint the inside with a good colour then glue it to the tube ,then cast in clear ( no wonder blanks are not for sale )
glad rap works well as a table cover as well

your right its impossible , just use small feathers , a lot easier but still impossible, i love this site when the guru's do the impossible
