My 1st work bench
G'day All,
Just about to start my 1st work bench build so I thought I better start a thread for it, still trying to source some wood for the frame but I have some left over over MDF from some shelves I cut for mum a month ago which ended up being perfect size for the top.
Have the top marked out and I'm going to trim it this arvo after work so then all I will be waiting for is the wood for the frame, only going for a simple design with a couple of drawers and a shelf underneath.
Will post some pics later and up post an up date once I've got the rest of the wood I plan on taking heaps of pics.
cheers,
Wayno

Marked out my top today and sat down with my calculator to work out how much wood I need so next weekend I will get the wood and hopefully get it put together, it's not going to be a massive bench 1200mm x 600mm but it will do me for now and I can always build a bigger one later on if I need it.
I took some pics, but everyone has seen some wood with lines drawn on it so I will post them with the rest of the pics next weekend.
The wife suggested I set up my gopro and do a time lapse shoot of the build so I might do that as well.
Cheers,
Wayno

Timelapse GoPro it, that way we can watch how much head scratching and tool-throwing there is

Thought I'd post an up date because it's been a few weeks, not that there's much to up date.
Couldn't find any wood near my place so was off to the big green shed to get some then sort of run out of time and money.
Works been flat out just about every shift so when I get home I'm too buggered to think about going to get wood.
Hopefully might get things started in the next couple of weeks, kinda bummed it's done yet as I was planning on having it done weeks ago.
Have other stuff I need to do but cant get started on my other projects until I get my bench built.
cheers,
Wayno

sorry for the lack of updates but I havent had the time to even think about my bench.
I sold my other car that was taking garage space so now I have a spot itching to be filled with my bench.
I have to take my car in to have something looked at so if I have time after that Im going to go get the wood.
I'm volunteering at an airshow in Wollongong on the weekend so I wont get to start it this weekend but at least the wood will be there and if I get time during the week I can get a start on it.
But the plan is that I will have at least started on it by the end of next week any luck might have it done.

One of the things that we learn on the way for work in progress is that sometimes life gets in the way. We have all experienced it so no need to rush the build for us.
And one other thing enjoy the build it is after all a fun project.

Well finally after a couple months I've managed to make a start on my bench, I bought some 70x35mm pine from a timber yard last week.
Got them to cut the lengths in half for me so they would fit in my car, then went home and measured them up and cut them with my circular saw. Of course I realised halfway through it would of been easier with a drop saw but haven't been able to afford one.
Got the top frame done and screwed together, cut the top then screwed the legs together.
One of the wifes friends hubbies has a drop saw so went around there yesterday and squared the legs up for me as surprise, surprise I cut the wood evenly with my saw.
Today got the top screwed and glued on and tomorrow I plan on finishing it up basically I just have to screw the legs on.
I've taken pics of all the steps and will post them up tomorrow night along with pics of the finished bench.
It's not exactly pretty as this has been my first big wood working project but it will serve a purpose, wife has already got a list of projects she wants me to start on once the bench is done including a hall table and a small coffee table for the lounge room.
At least the project has taught me a few things which I will be able to put into practice when I start the wife's project.
The bonus is I've had a ball doing it, learn't some things and everything went together fairly well and I didn't pull out any of the remaining hair I do have.

My bench is done and I'm on to the next project just thought I would pop up a few pics of the build its far from pretty but after banging away on it all weekend it's sturdy and will do the job nicely. Only thing I really need to do is get some wood for the bottom shelf.
