Community workbench
Two of us had a commision earlier in the year to knock up a workbench for a commun ity workshop at Blue Knob hall near nimbin. We had a week to do it and the budget was tight, so we went down to old Paddy's place where council workers left old wooden bridge timbers for him to make use of. We had to heat them up with a blow torch and scrape them with a bolster shoved up a gal pipe to get the tar off. There was still tar and tiny rock in the cracks so had to stomach that a bi, but it wasn't as difficult on the planer as you might think. Finish was fibreglass resin as it had to be waterproof for feltmaking. The first coats were done with dilutions of acetone so the resin would penetrate the wood. All bolted together - a little beauty we reckon - a little rough at the edges but cheap.

Yeah a little hard to see from the pictures but it looks ok.
Would have been an interesting thing with a work in progress.

I'd love a bench with deep sinks like that. Looks honest, strong and ready to cope with the felters or anything, good improvisation with the tap set-up too
