I'm sure there is a purpose, but what is it? I guess I may just not have encountered a situation where I needed to stop my vise firmly in mid travel.

    Cheers,

Not familiar with leg vises, Luke?

The idea is to lock the bottom end of the chop approximately the thickness of the workpiece from the bench so that the top end of the chop can clamp it securely.

Where this device is good is that in most leg vises you need to bend or kneel down to place a pin in the right hole to fix the distance, whereas with this one as demonstrated, you lift the pawl off the ratchet with your foot, saving your back.

    Cheers

    Ah, ok. I get it.

You're right in that the problem is I know nothing about leg vises. I always just assumed they were just a really tall version of a front vise. After your explanation I now realize how wrong that was!
