Thread: About time for a propper bench

Hi,
Well just about finished. Been away for easter and then came down with a bad cold, Today felt up to some shed time so did a final flattening then a scrape and a first coat of BLO and turps. The No 7 is made for flattening large tops as it just finds the high spots by itself. No sanding as it is only a bench and I dont want the top too slick. I have not yet drilled dog holes as I first want to try a sliding T bracket to see how it goes and experiment a bit. I think a split top should not need dog holes. I will do dog holes if I have to. Some kind of trays for underneath storage still being mulled over too. The vice handle is mulberry as I had some left over bits I had been keeping for tool handles. It is all knock down so I can still reposition the front vice and even the top in relation to the base to get it just how I like if required. Feel free to make observations. I just spotted the bit without oil. Get it on the second coat.
Regards
John

Are you going to put a shelf across the bottom?

Wow. Nice bench build. It makes me want to build a new one for myself as mine is a bit on the light/small side. But i guess it's not the size that counts, it's how often you use it.

Hi,
Well I could not wait so instead of applying a second coat of BLO I had a play. I think I can manage without dog holes as my try at a sliding bench stop actually works. Used with the tail vice I planed a rough sawn 4x2 across the grain. I also tried the fitted bench stop and the center board to rough a bit of black wattle with a jack plane. I am glad I went with the split top. There is a whole lot of flexability.
The top will get 1 more coat of oil and I still need to lake a shelf for the bottom but it is now a working bench.
Regards
John
