Woodwork for children
Hi, My 11 year old son is passionate about learning woodwork and tinkers constantly! He needs direction and instruction though and I have been unable to find appropriate classes for him in Sydney due to his age. He won't be at high school for another 18 months. Has anyone suggestions for how his passion can be nurtured despite parents who have no such skills?
All advice gratefully received!

Could try a men's shed! It really depends if someone is willing to take him under his wing!

I could possibly give him so lessons and/or possibly some projects he could do as i have been doing wood tech since year 7 and currently doing a major project.

Another idea might be a Steiner school. They do wood work from day one. Dunno if you can just go to the wood work class!

Nigel's offer sounds good but if that doesn't work out I wouldn't worry about it too much. I had no one to instruct me either - my dad's tool of choice was a BIG chainsaw.

My reply may not be on the helpful side but please do whatever it takes to give him what he needs, kids wanting to do 'manual arts' these days are extremely rare and it sounds like he could be fantastic at it. If i was in Sydney he would be welcome in my shed anytime!
