Bandsaw and Lathe Purchase - Urgent Help Required
Hi Guys,
I have been a lurker here for a while and really enjoy the forums. I am quite a keen poster on some other sites, but my ability in woodworking is rather specialised (although it is getting broader).
Anyway, I am looking at getting a bandsaw and saw this in the local trading post:
Electra Beckum Bandsaw 450 depth, wood fast wood lathe, MC900, extras $1500
I called about it and the guy said that the bandsaw was about 2m tall. This makes me think that it is a serious machine. Problem is that I have just gone over the site and seen a few "reviews" of Electra Beckum bandsaws and they were generally pretty poor. Does that also apply to a saw of this size?
I don't know how old it is, but I am going down to see him tonight. Any help would be REALLY appreciated.
Also, I have been interested in wood turning for a while, and would pick up the wood lathe as well if the bandsaw was a good buy. I know the lathe is a good brand, but it is the bandsaw I want/need more right now. I want it for cutting veneers.
Cheers

Pic of bandsaw didnt work.
Do you know what model number bandsaw?
Also depends what condition they are in and what "extras" are being thrown in. The extras alone *may* be worth quite a bit.
As a comparison, for about $1800 (if you haggle), you can buy a new 17" floor standing bandsaw and MC900 lathe new (but no extras). How much wood could the woodchuck chuck if the woodchuck could chuck wood?

As for the extras, I suspect that they are really for the lathe. I know they may be worth quite a bit, but I don't know what they are. As I said, the bandsaw is my main interest, the lathe would be a bonus (but a very big one).
I also do not know the model number. The guy didn't even know what size the wheel was, so I didn't bother asking too many questions when I finally got in contact last night. I also will not be able to contact him until later tonight (basically when I get there).
More than anything I want to know - has EB ever made a good bandsaw, and even better, are their big bandsaws good?
Cheers

450mm depth is only a 16" throat.
An MC-900 is under $400 and an "average" 14" bandsaw around $750. Anything bigger and you're moving into ranges that really should be light industrial class and are looking at the $2K+ mark.
Throw in a chuck, around $250-, and a selection of lathe tools, say one ea. of good quality roughing, bowl & spindle gouges and a skew chisel, around another $300 and mebbe a cheapie set for another $30.
Grand total: $1730. That's all new and under warranty.
Unless the bandsaw is an exceptional buy or there's a lot more accessories, I don't think that $1500 really such a bargain, unless, of course, the gear is near new...
That's my 2C worth of befuddling the issue, anyway.

Mate has an Electra Bekum 'industrial' bandsaw in his shop that's about that size - he bought it because EB are owned by AEG. Frankly I have only seen one or two cheap Chinese bandsaws that are as basic & poorly fitted out, and I don't think they are any worse in quality.
Almost any Carbatec or Hare & Forbes (Hafco) saw is going to be better & have more features, like a tension indicator & tension release, working rip fence etc.
The MC900 lathe is available in a host of guises - Woodfast being one.
Try shopping around the 'mainland' dealers for freight rates - e-mail is only going to cost you a few minutes of time to send & let them know that you are checking around for the best deal.

Thanks fellas.
The bandsaw was a 17" model and is in good nick. It has five speeds which is nice for me as I do a fair amount of light nonferrous metal work too.
The lathe came with a VERY sturdy base, a good four jaw chuck and about 30ish chisels.
The bandsaw came with about 4-5 blades, but they are all pretty junky. They have a little rust on them and I suspect that they are not as sharp as they could be...
I got the guy to accept $1200.
I am pretty happy. Thanks for the advice though.

I will, but unfortunately it is going to have to wait until my shed undergoes an overhaul. I am presently looking for a new house in order to build a "proper" sized shed. That way it can possibly fit me AND the tools in it at the same time.
