Default WTB Froe 12-14 inches long 10-13mm thick

as per title description I am wanting to buy a froe

vital stats Blade 12-14 inches long 10-13mm thick for splitting green wood that is reasonably thick

used or new must be in reasonable condition with a secure eye weld and not too much pitting.

Be great if it was available to be picked up at the Katoomba GTG otherwise post ok.

In my experience froes are as rare as hens teeth in Australia. I ended up buying a brand new one from Lie-Nielsen however Lee Valley sells also.

    Paul

I have one that you may be able to use. I will bring it along to the GTG for you appraisal. It is the right length but not as thick as you are specifying. I also have another suggestion about making one up as my impression without having a lot of experience in this area (I have two) is that they are not normally much thicker than 6mm - 8mm.

I just checked the Lie Neilsen site and their bigger froe is 3/8" thick.

    Talk to you on Sunday.

    Regards
    Paul

Sounds like it could be a good price Paul (ah, but which "Paul" do I mean? ).

As far as green timber goes, I have some sissy softwood (almost white and straight grained) here that was cut about a month ago (for firewood), or BYO testing wood.

Let me know how to birch/alder wood goes as if it works nicely I will let you know if I am removing any more and I may put a post on the forum for other spoon carvers to collect some.

Would part of the cutting edge on a road grader blade with a steel ferule welded or bolted onto it and then welded be a possible option as I may be able to assist you with the grader blade.

Hi Paul, The next time that I am up the coast which will be quite soon I will grab the piece of steel. I will cut it at around 20" long to allow you to maybe bend a eye to attach a handle. the blade is about 70mm tall and 10mm thick at a guess I did not have a tape measure so I couldn't get accurate measurements. it is a bit rusted due to being exposed to a bit of salt air but should clean up fine. Sent you a pic via email. Cheers Pat

I'm not sure that grader blade cutting edges are amenable to blacksmithing. I've a vague recollection that the edges are some sort of HSS selected for its abrasion resistance.
