was that the same auction that had the Hercus 9B cylindrical grinder.... Had never heard of a 9B before, looked like a stretched 9A... It had no bids as well...

Peoples' stupidity and greed WRT Ebay never fails to astound me. That grinder was sitting there for days with a BIN of $375. Now some clown, in the hopes of saving themselves a lousy $75, has put in a minimum bid and someone else has also bid, looking at the bid count.

Now if I'd actually wanted the thing, I'd have hit the BIN button as soon as I'd satisfied myself WRT freight, condition etc and known I'd had it at a good price. But no, the 'bright spark' has now started a potential bidding war in the hope of saving peanuts. The tooling needed to make that machine useful is easily going to push the cost to $1500 or more. There was a Taiwanese machine listed, in much better cosmetic condition, loaded with tooling, sold for $1526. IMO a far better deal than this old Cincy.

As I said, greed & stupidity combined. I've been watching that grinder since it was listed, going to be interesting to see if the price goes over $375 now. Kind of funny really....

    Hi .RC.

Yes, same auction, more fall out from the car parts industry collapsing.. same company as the Towoomba CMI foundry, and There was a CMI Foundry in Horsham as well, I wonder if the Horsham foundry has been liquidated yet? Maybe Harty or Jayson can find out?

As far as the Hercus Grinder goes it sold for $500, one bid only... went to someone in Deniquilin.... Hercus 9B cylindrical grinder with attachments Auction (0076-3002967) | GraysOnline Australia

We met a guy from Brisbane who was there to pick up his Herbert Grinder (Blanchard Style) that he bought for $1000, the 36" (900mm, we lent him the tape to measure it..) diameter electric magnetic chuck would be worth that.

Sad to see the total devastation and wanton destruction that seems to accompany these sort of factory closures... years of history just thrown away without a second thought.

Anyway, they were almost gone when I made my ridiculous offer
Although I didn't get anywhere there, he was very helpful. I got an exploded drawing of a 4 plus I found out the secret weakness of that model.

Thanks Michael, Now that my plan to sell the type IV for huge profits has evaporated , I will have to talk to you about finding out the secret weakness of the type IV it's not the irreplaceable plastic gear by any chance?

I really don't think you understand the concept of an AUCTION....

He who wants it more pays the most

    Default Surface Plate

Sadly the surface plate Surface Plate, Ignyte Precision Granite, 920mm x 600mm on fabricated steel Auction (0357-5006165) | GraysOnline Australia isn't $29 any more, but still very cheap. Hopefully it goes to a deserving member here. Ray, you should buy it, then you could stack all your matching surface plates together like a giant Matryoshka doll!

Matthew, not to put words in Peter's mouth, but I took his point to mean that if somebody wanted the grinder they had the opportunity to do so earlier. Instead, by trying to save some money instead of a very reasonable BIN it's now gone to auction and, while it initially started lower, the fact that now multiple people are involved, they may well end up paying more than they would have paid had they just settled on the BIN price. At least that's what I understood, but sometimes wise men speak in mysterious tongue, besides, what would I know about business.

Thanks Pete, good idea, unfortunately our rock collection is growing faster than the spaces required to house it... just while we are discussing that particular Ignyte plate, I hope that anyone here who is bidding on it realises that it's going to weigh 200 Kg or so, and factors in the cost of moving it... of course the potential for such a surface plate to burn down the workshop should not be ignored..

There's a couple of other things in that auction that I'm interested in, but driving to Sydney for collection is not very attractive...

Yes, that's it Ray - the famous irreplaceable gear. Apparently they get more brittle with age. My plan was to take mine apart and measure it with the hope of being able to make up a spare for it in metal or plastic. Shall I put you down for a spare gear if I can work it out?

Not so sure about that one Pete - it's stepped and has a slight helix. In the diagram below it is the one with the flag on it. Degree of difficulty goes up...
