    Default Jacobs Gear Hobbing Machine

Does anyone know anything about these?

There was an in depth discussion on I assume the HSM forum on that machine, improvements and limitations...

And on edit here is the link to the discussion but it is for a slightly different (improved?) design then Jacobs design

This should be a nice machine.....don't know if the top speed would be a bit limiting though.

I've read a little about them. Although I did consider one as a project I'm not leaping to get one for a few reasons -
    • For a start, the gears that it can make are not all that large - from memory up to around 90mm diameter. I think I asked Martin Models whether it could do a 6" gear and the emails stopped. 90mm is alright if you are making small things but that's only a 40t gear if you are making up 12DP gears.
    • Despite the enthusiastic reception that the linked review gives it, having the drive shafts with universal joints means that there will be a slight change in angular velocity so the teeth will not be 100% even - it may not matter but if I'm going to spend that sort of money it needs to be an improvement on what I can currently do with a dividing head. In fact, as I can mill spur and helical gears as well as do worms on the lathe, I'm not sure what it would do for me that I can't already do (although admittedly the machine should be faster)
    • The last concern is the rigidity of the machine. While it would do brass and Al gears, I'm not sure how it would go with steel of a reasonable DP. To me it looks like the sort of thing that is built as a display/ working model, but then I've never really liked equipment that won't do industrial scale things for me

I did think (and probably will think again) about making up a gear hobber that would do all this but it soon got very complicated once you started thinking about transferring motion and the various gear trains that would involve. I suspect too that once it was made (complete with all the change gears that it would require) most of the time that it was not idle it would end up cutting gears for other people - and you guys would not want that, would you?

My ancient memories of hobbers are that they are complicated. I operated one that had either 4 or 6 stations in a circle. This was only for a few hours or a day I think. It was probably the size of your workshop.

There may be the odd use for a hobber but it would probably be more trouble than it was worth it to do all that sending of parcels around the country etc. I sort of had a similar idea when I saw this one on EBay, but of course had no idea what its capacity was. From what you say it will be a bit limited.

One of the problems with building a hobber, so it seems to me is that you need a hobber to produce all the gears to build it.

Is it my imagination or is every threading gauge in the set missing from this Mitutoyo thread micrometer?

Should be easier today with CNC.... I am ever more amazed at what CNC can do... As the years pass you can foresee multiple machines in the likes of jobbing shops will be replaced by machining centres with the appropriate software...

Thats just the slug from when the hole was punched in the plastic.... so not a lot of use

I must say I thought the anvils covered more range, but still one more set would cover 90% of the threads I cut. M2 and M3. M0.6-1.75.
I've only ever seen one mic with a full set of anvils, if I recall correctly I stopped bidding around $220. hehe

I actually was starting to wonder if when you buy these thread micrometers you have a choice of what anvils to buy with it.... As I have never seen a complete set..
