You may remember the subject of radial arm saws came up and I mentioned framing saws. I ewnt looking for something else and turned up this thread. I had forgotten I had done it:

Despite having far to many projects on the boil i got sidetracked on Sunday and made one of the jar holders i was talking about in the prattle.... this one is made from reclaimed pallet wood and just glued together, i went to take a better photo just now and it's disappeared already. I will admit i already had the bottom panel glued up.

I got sick of sitting around doing nothing - so I took up meditation.

Gah! thanks Phil. I'm really not back in the swing of things, am I.

I will be out but will see if I am able to listen in from the car whilst I travel.

I mentioned on the Prattle some criteria for what constitutes a favourite timber. It can be because that is what you have, I could be because you have acquired it cheaply or at no cost at all. It could be because you like the look of it and it could even be a combination of all these things.

I said I liked Radiata Pine, but only because I have a lot of it for free or close to other than picking it up from a rubbish dump.

Some short stuff that looks like this

    P1070095 (Medium).JPG

There is about twice this amount

    P1070093 (Medium) (2).JPG

A little more stored in the improvised "cupboard" on top of a shipping container

    P1070098 (Medium).JPGP1070096 (Medium).JPG

    It is a bit longer

    P1070097 (Medium).JPG

Quite a bit longer, but this stack is nearly out in the open. Well Ok it is in the open.

    P1070088 (Medium) (2).JPGP1070089 (Medium).JPG

About 180mm x 60mm The planks have a shallow groove down their length ( you can see this in the earlier pix)

    P1070092 (Medium).JPGP1070090 (Medium) (2).JPG

They get ripped down for various uses: Eventually.

    Default Apologies for The Absence!

I usually keep an eye on what is being offered by the local auction house at their general auction conducted every Friday.

I had my eye set on a deWalt 735x thicknesser in quite good nick. I checked the serial number and consulted Prof Google who advised that the first 4 digits correspond to the year of manufacture: 2004. The heads of a few bolts/screws and the infeed table were very slightly pitted, all was clean under the top cover and I didn't feel any nicks on the blades. All fairly basic I know but all indicating that it had not been flogged over time.
I decided to attend the auction and set my limit at $350-$400. I must be a poor judge of value/demand because the bidding opened at $500 and reached the final bid of $800 in no time. Add the buyer's premium and it sold for $930 !!!

So I missed on a thicknesser AND I missed the prattle. Must be a moral in all this!!!

Se ya all next Friday...unless of course I am side-tracked once again by an elusive auction lot !!

    Cheers'

Phew, Phil nearly had to step in again...

I'm afraid I'm a maybe tomorrow. In fact this year is going to be a struggle for me as rather than being in the shed on Fridays I'll be out and about more often than not. None the less I'll join in whenever possible.

This week's topic is all about our ears:
    • What do you listen to when in the workshop? Music, podcasts etc. And what do you listen on?
    • What do you use for hearing protection?

I should be here, my music is very catholic. I listen to almost anything. I dont need hearing protection with hand tools. With my big saws I use Stihl ear protection.

    Hi All,

As I can't make it again this week, I'll leave it for someone else to suggest a topic.
