Hobart Wooden Boat Festival 2011 - Sailing Dinghy display
OK, here's the story (and the challenge),
The Lindisfarne Sailing Club has been approached to put together a display of appropriate sailing dinghies for the 2011 Festival. I happen to have been promoted to organiser of such. And I'm a newcomer to Tassie!!
At the moment my ideas are that I'll find out what classes were popular during the sixties, then see if I can get a representative example of each class. Now given the scarcity, or plain downright difficulty in bringing these things to the light of day (see the Gwen12 thread, https://www.woodworkforums.com/f32/gwen-12-a-100751/ ) I feel I need the help of this forum.
Sooooooooooooooooo,
1) Can anyone here start me off on a list of Classes that may have been sailing in or around Hobart in the sixties? Or name names that I can chase up?
2) Has anyone got any leads I can follow to chase up ANY small sailing dinghies from around this era??
3) Has anyone any connection to any Club Champions or Title holders that I can talk to and/or perhaps get some photos/articles etc to help flesh out the display???
That's all for now. I'll report on progress as we go.........
Thanks in advance, Peter."....we also have a line of very nice umbrellas..."

Peter , have you spoken to Andrew Denman ?.
I'm sure if he doesn't know himself , he can put you on to people that do know.

Andrew mightn't know it yet, but he's on out "to contact" list....
So far it looks like we have a Heron, an International Cadet, a Mirror, a Sabre, a Sabot and an NS14 as well as Graeme's Gwen12. All are these are still to be nailed down and confirmed and none of then preclude having more than one of any class, but so far it's looking OK.
We still have a Moth, an OK Dinghy, Lightweight Sharpie, Fireball, Rainbow, Tamar, Flying11, Cherub and a Flying Dutchman all on our "wish list"."....we also have a line of very nice umbrellas..."

Given the "other" Wooden Boat Festival thread and the BIg "O" bait I would have thought a gunter rigged Humble Bee would be welcome by herself - right Rob?

Peter , if I could build a Humble Bee myself , I'd be following that thread.
But alas , I doubt I could , so I haven't kept up to date with progress.
But I do need a bigger tender that I could still legally carry across the cockpit of HS , when she is on the trailer , and I did get some plans from Iain , so its a possibility that I could have one made for me.
What about a PDR , I have one of them nearly finished?.

For the Tamar class contact Tamar Yacht Club. They have one sitting in their foyer and if you ask nicely they may let you borrow it!!!!
Also for some nice older Sabots you could also try TYC or try port Dalrymple YC. My father and grandfather built one called Salt in about 1970 and last time I heard PDYC owned it.

Don't rememebr much of the sixties, but I sailed a Rainbow out of Lindisfarne in the seventies. I haen't seen my old boat for about 20 years, last I heard it was down at Nubeena.
Other classes at Linidsfarne at the time were Sabots, Herons, Tamars and NS14's. Some of the NS14's were fibreglass but there were still some wooden ones sailing. NS14's were also sailed at Montrose Bay and I think Austin's Ferry.
Classes sailing at the time at other Hobart clubs from memory were:
RYCT - 12' Cadet, Lightweight Sharpie, Enterprise
Bellerive - Fireball, Enterprise
Montrose Bay - Moth, Mirror, Sabot
Sandy Bay - International Cadet, Rainbow, OK Dinghy
Other than contacting the clubs directly I can't suggest any contact names sorry, although there have been specimens of some of the above classes turn up at the AWBF in previous years.
Cheers, Cameron.

A few NS14s have been in the fleet too.
Would be great to get a state of the art (1980s) plywood scow moth if possible. About the most sophisticated construction imaginable - to get hull weight down to about 35lbs. 0.7mm ply hull - 1.2mm cockpit.
