Thanks for the photos Brian, if my boat turns out half as good I will be happy. I was impressed at how well she looked on the water with 2 adults in her, as this is a bit of a worry for me (tall small for me plus the admiral). I was influenced to build the Auk by memories of my Mum & Dad fishing out of a 8ft clinker Huon Pine dingy on the Mersey River ( the Tasmanian one)
I have not decided on the paint job on my boat yet but I figuer I still have plenty of time before I have to worry about that. I have been testing Decks Ole on the big boat for a couple of years, but I am not all that impressed with the wear, it appears that the Tassy pines will not suck enough oil into them.

At the Lyme Regis Boat Building School launch day, my son Edward took lots of photos.
The Auk was sailed with the helm sitting right at the back. She coped with this abuse really well, the hull is burdensome. I was told the hhelm was a very experienced sailor so I guess he was just enjoying how much abuse this little boat could take.

She was very impressive. I reckon you have no worries about carrying you and your crew.

Hi Guys any one had any experence with using Norglass filler to do fillets on the lapstrakes. I am having a hard time doing fillets using botecote as I just can't get the consistency right and using the sawdust trick is a disaster. I found half a tin of Norglass filler that I used to fix a gap around a chain plate on the big boat, after some mongrel ran in to it on the mooring, and it is still water tight after 4 years. The finish I get on the norglass fillets after just a couple of rubs of sandpaper are perfect, and I plan to just paint the inside of the boat so uv should not be a problem. I have just emailed the Norglass mob and asked all the usall dumb questions , like fillet stength and compatability with bote cote, but there is no beter advice than someone who has actually used it, so over to you wizards.

We have had a couple of rainy weekends up here so I have done a bit on the Auk. We have a new computer but I will try and post some pictures.
The white stuff is Norglass which I find much easier to use but I have discoverd that bote cote will disolve it. I have sealed the laps with bote cote then filleted in the norglas and I will paint over it.
The floor beams are oregon which I am not all that happy about, but at the moment it is a matter of using what I already have. The plans call for a 6mm strip to be laminated over the floor beams so I figure by the time I glue a strip of poly saturated Maple (which I have heaps off already 6mm) the whole thing should hold together.
I went over to the timber mob at Windsor to pick up some more goo and they showed me some 150 x 10mm red silkwood that they suggested might be ok for floor boards. I am not familar with this timber, any thoushts on its suitability guys.

Don't you just hate it when you find a mistake that was made over 12 months ago.
Started to try and fit the centre case and found that I fitted the keel some 10mm of centre. So I turned the boat over and cut part of the keel of and will fix it "later".

I never tire of build adjustments (stuff ups) even my own.
What did you end up with for the floor boards I don't know red silkwood got any pics of it, I've been thinking WRC for my Coquina but.........Mike

"build adjustments" sounds so much better than stuff ups, Mike I have a camera full of them. I have not bought the red silkwood yet but it looked really nice in the rack. We pulled a lenght out and "bend tested it" , which was very impresive.
It is still a bit cold up here so I will have to pull out the acme gloo heater (see pic) and fit the centre case, which belive it or not, I dry fitted last night with out to many build adjustments.

I have made a few variations to Iain O's plans of the centre case as I was worried about getting a good seal through the keelson. I made the "end bits" of the case 10mm wider so they protruded right through the bottom of the boat . Of course this means the dagger board will be 20mm narrower, but I don't intend "standing" on it to many times.
I have also found a really good use for whipper snipper cord (see pics). The sons weights are finaly getting some use as well.

Hi Guys the Auk is starting to look like a boat. I blew the budget and bought some good timber from the Windsor mob and now I have seats and floor boards.
The wife has just bought a new car and because the garage is the boat shed she is sending me of to buy a carport tommorow, she has not twigged yet that I need some where to hang the mast and boom of the Auk. The carport should make a great paint shop too.

I have found a good use for the purabond, sticking sticks on the plastic tender to keep it afloat until the new tender is finished.

Another little milestone, splashing some paint and varnish about. I figure that it would be easier to paint the bottom bits before I glue the thwarts in, and then the knees etc etc.

It's been a while since I have done any thing to the Auk, but with a couple of Tafe courses nearly completed and a bit of OS travel done I figured I should do a bit. Slashed a bit more paint about after spending the best part of a day sanding back the previous poor effort. I left the tharwts out to long and found that the beam had grown about 5mm so I bit the bullet and glued them in and fitted the huon pine knees. I made the knees as per Iain's plans but they look a bit bulky so I will see if I can get the spokeshave working and whittle them down a bit. With a bit of luck there should be some pictures here.

Hi Ian,
It's looking really good. Take some more time off - I still haven't caught up.
Don't know about the knees. It's a tough looking little boat - maybe the knees go as they are.
What paint are you using? I've been looking into the subject have come up with about 50 paint options and 100+ opinions. I'll just about settle for anything that sticks to the patches of epoxy on the ply.
